I managed to get a photo pass for the Kaiser Chiefs show last night at the Beacon Theater, in New York City. Last time I went there was in 1996 to see Jethro Tull. That was only my third concert ever too! I'll have more about the actual concert tomorrow in a live review but for now; let's just say I don't want to go shoot photos at the Beacon Theater anytime soon....
I got to shoot right in front of the stage for the first two bands, Data Rock and White Rabbits. But when it came time for the Kaiser Chiefs, I was told that most of the photographers had to shoot from the sides of the venue. I'm not entirely sure if that was the band's idea or the venue's. I never shot in a seated venue before and probably won't do it again unless it's someone really good like Tom Waits or something. So it was pretty much a waste to shoot the Kaiser Chiefs because I didn't get too many good shots. I could only really get pictures of the singer & guitarist since the rest of the band members were in dark lighting or being blocked by people. I'm too short and got lots of heads in my shots as well.
I don't get why I had to shoot from the sides of the stage and aisles when there were plenty of empty seats in the front. There was a small group of photographers who seemed like they had VIP access and got escorted right to the middle of the aisles to shoot. Must have been with the band or Rolling Stone or something. Of course they can get good shots when they are the ONLY ones allowed to shoot in the middle! Call me bitter but fuck that crap. Maybe I'll just stick to smaller clubs and bands that don't have 50 publicists to go through, just to take pictures of them..and then only be told you can't shoot them right in front. What made the shoot even more ironic was everyone with a point and shoot camera probably getting ten times better photos than me since they were allowed to bring cameras in. Figures the guy who was authorized to shoot there can't get good photos and be in front. But when some joe schmoe groupie girl with a crappy camera can take pictures the entire show, it's ok? I don't see the logic in that. Ugh..ANYWAY, here are some photos from the concert.
