Today I was greated with the news that I have been waiting to hear for four long years...the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are back together. It may be temporary, it may be long term. Right now all that I care about is that it is going to be. They're reuniting for the 10th Hometown Throwdown in Boston for five shows in the end of December. If all goes according to plan, I will be attending one or two of those shows.
Since I live in Western Pennsylvania I'm going to have to fly into Boston, stay in a hotel for a few days and fly back before work on New Years Eve. But do you know what? It would be worth every penny. I must be crazy, right? Not really. I would be crazy to not go to this show.
Here's a little history about myself and the Bosstones. I'll start off by saying that they are the band that single-handedly got me into the entire punk and ska genre way back in '96. Right before the big third-wave ska explosion took place, I was vacationing in North Carolina when the Bosstones came on the radio. I had never heard that type of music before in my life and I was instantly curious. When I got back home, I raided every record store that I could find and bought every CD that contained either a plaid background or a little bulldog named Otis on it. My first ever concert was the Mighty Mighty Bosstones with the Amazing Royal Crowns and Bim Skala Bim. After that first show, I promised myself that I would attend every single show that I could. And I did. I've probably seen the Bosstones two dozen times and every single show was better than the last. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have provided me with a soundtrack to the greatest moments in my life...from the mini-skank pit that I started at my wedding reception to taking road trips with my friends back in high school.
If this really is a final send off for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones...then I have to be there. This band is just too important to me. As stupid as that may sound, it's the truth. Now I have a reason to toast. Throwdown here I come!
