Goshen, NY: The Nathaniel White Farm House

*Disclaimer: This place is illegal to visit so if you see a trespassing sign, use your common sense. If you trespass, it’s on your own terms, not ours.*

I remember when I was younger hearing about the murderer Nathaniel White. How could I not? It was all over the local newscasts and newspapers. Nathaniel had murdered women, both young and old, in his Goshen farmhouse and buried them up in the hills behind his home. Those hills were home to the popular restaurant Hillcrest Manor, which burned down years prior to this man’s gruesome murders.

As I got older, and got into ghost hunting, this place was a magnificent find. Knowing the history, I was sure to find SOMETHING paranormal. Be careful what you wish for sometimes, because you will get what you want.

My first encounter with the Nathaniel White farmhouse was a creepy one. Walking into the front door takes your breath away. You feel a presence of evil, and a presence of pain and sadness. I went with a small group of friends, equipped with a voice recorder, flashlights, and some cameras, we were ready to explore.

Feeling uneasy, we didn’t stay long. In the pictures we had gotten what seemed to be “orbs”, and we listened back on the tape, and what we heard was absurd. There were no cars driving by at the time we went, but what we had heard on the tape sounded just like that, and even worse. It sounded angry whatever it was, so we took off and headed home.

The next time, I had brought another group of friends. We didn’t make it past the front door this time. Two of my friends had heard voices whispering over by the swamp. We didn’t wait around to find out WHAT the hell it was. We decided to take a quick drive up the dirt road behind the house, where the bodies of Nathaniel’s victim’s were buried. Blasting NSYNC to keep us calm, we continued up the path and came across the burnt down Hillcrest Manor. Still feeling freaked out, we left after about two minutes. Vowing to never go back there again…what do I do a few months later?

Of course I go back…. This time with ANOTHER group of people who are new to this place. Equipped with camera’s, video cameras, and plenty flashlights, we were ready to try and explore every inch of the house this time. As always, an eerie feeling was coming across all throughout the house. Two out of the group were brave enough to walk down to the basement to take a few pictures, and my one friend’s video camera stopped working. It was fully charged when we went into the house, and was fine when we left, but as we were inside…it didn’t want to work.

The next day, my friend that had taken pictures and some video with his digital camera and stopped by my job to show me what he had found on the camera. An apparition of a girl was on the wall, and listening to what he had recorded, we had gotten what sounded like a girl saying “Help Me”.

This place takes your breath away. It’s extremely haunted, and whatever is there, isn’t friendly or happy. If you do decide to check this place out, please take caution. The house is near falling down, nails are sticking out of every wall, and the stairs are NOT sturdy. Oh yeah, and there are evil ghosts in there as well.  But, all in all, this place is pretty nifty. Check it out at your own risk tho.

  1. I live in the local area. A few years back in 2003 somewhere in the middle of fall that year. My four friends and I started talking about haunted locations and errie legends of local places near where we lived. The “Goshen House” to us, came up. we decided to take the drive, feeling confident we would come across some paranormal activity. Seeing how at the time it was about a lil after 11:30PM and close to midnight. As we were on Rt.211 In Mddletown, NY making are way to the traffic light to get on to 17 heading to Goshen. My girlfriend at the time was in the front passanger Seat and my friend Kristen was driving. My other two friends and I were in the back seat. As we were coming up on that traffic light, both girls screamed at the top of there lungs! Kristen stoped dead on the road! She started franticaly crying. Swearing she just hit a girl. Both of the girls swear up and down, that they just saw a girl with dark hair and wearing ripped ragged clothing in witch this girl was holding her cloths on her body and she appeared to have been beaten and abused. They described her to us this way, and told us that the girl walked across 211 and stopped dead in front of us and looked up at them. As kristen ran through the girl, whom she thought to be alive, the girl had vanished. The three of us in the back seat, saw nothing. however we were also B.S.ing and not paying any attention.

The story continues. After calming the girls down and disscusing if we should take what had happened as a sign not to go. We still decided we must know. So we proceded to the “Goshen House”. As we pulled up and stoped in front of the old house. We brifed are one friend Dave on the history and story of what had happened there. I myself, being intune with the dead since I was about four. Being told by my family I would conversate with people who I would point out in pictures, but were deaceased. Had a gut rentching feeling as soon as we stopped in front of the house. I just new there was bad ju ju there, and I had the feeling we were being watched. None the less I still wanted to go in. As I opened the door. The car was in chaos my ex was trying to stop me. My friend Les was complaning that his stomach was in pain, and damn near crying. Kristen And my other friend Dave, were yelling that we needed to leave, now! I slammed the door and she took off like a bat out of Hell. The whole time back to Middletown Les, was still hurting. As soon as we parked he opened his door, literaly feel out and was vomitting uncontrolably. The next day he was still the same way. He was taken to the hospital. Doctors couldnt exsplain it. He still today has stomach problems. It may well be coincidence. However I belive it to be conected in some way to that night.

  4. When I first found that there was a haunted history behind this house, i was totally shocked…I had always noticed the house for years and felt there was something really creepy about it. After searching for haunted places me and my boyfriend could visit for fun online, to my suprise this house came up! i was completely intrigued by the stories so i decided to visit. i work in the area so i went one day with my girlfriend on our lunch break…we did not make it down harriman drive, we were too freaked out. SO i decided to go with my boyfriend…we went at around 11:00 at night sometime this past March. We got down the road and parked my car in front of the house….i told him to get his camera ready and i had mine…I yelled GIve us a sign that you are here and all of a sudden i hear my boyfriend yelling LETS GET OUT OF HERE so i ran like hell to the car. we got in and i was screaming what happened what happened and he told me that something was blocking him from taking a picture…but when we were in the car driving away it was FINE. I looked at the shots he got- there were three…the first one you can make out the house…the second one is pitch black and the third one sent chills down my spine as i looked at it on his computer…I noticed a white light what most would refer to as an Orb…i zoomed closer and could see the outline of the house (the picture was very dark)…the light was coming straight out the attic window. I do not know what is there…but it is definitely haunted for sure. Skeptics might argue, but no one can explain what we experienced that night. I plan on going back with cameras and more equipment so I will keep updating this.

  10. See what TV and movies do…it makes you believe in ghosts. I find it funny that if a place was the site of murder it automatically is thought to be haunted with restless spirits. orbs and mysterious noises are not proof of restless spirits. if any person is trying to hear anything like a voice on a recording or a complete sentence or word…then they will hear it and thus the experiment or evidence is tainted. Especially if you take the recording to a friend that hasn’t heard it yet and say what do you hear the voice saying. Tainted.

  11. it’s not just tv and movies doing it to people.
There have been some pretty scary investigations that have plenty of proof of places being haunted.
Sure, not every place that was the site of a murder is haunted, but how can we dismiss the fact that there’s more to life after death.
I have a TON of solid proof that most of the place I’ve been to are haunted. People can believe what they want to believe, but the proof is there

  12. I don’t know, i like watching ghost stuff on TV like GH (not the other stupid crap out there like ghost adventures) but still skeptical because I haven’t personally experienced anything.

  13. I don’t like any of those ghost hunting shows…all those shows rely on editing and making the most mundane aspects of an investigation convincing and relevant. I’m with Bryan on this one, all “proof” that i ever seen is just not convincing enough. I’ve seen pics with orbs and been in some as well. What basis do I have to conclude those are ghosts and not something else? Nothing. Also, the whole seeing faces or shapes in shadows, well that goes to my virgin mary on pancakes theory. If it’s the virgin mary you can see in your pancakes, window, etc then why not elvis, the devil, or darth vader? I’ve seen things that can look like almost anything…a shape of a head, a child, a murder, a ghost! It’s hardwired in the human brain to identify human faces and shapes/facial features! That actually goes with sounds as well. It’s proven that any sound on a recording can almost sound like any figure of speech given the acceptance to look for an identifiable sound. Also, religion or belief in an after life is a major factor in believing in ghosts. if you are a strong skeptic in god or religion or even the afterlife then you really shouldn’t lean towards such a leap of faith as believing in ghosts.

Comment by Ray on July 9, 2009 at 7:27 pm
  14. I hate when people use orbs as evidence. It’s fucking dust particles, it happens just about anytime…especially in old buildings, where a lot of people go to investigate. but the photo ghost matrixing stuff happens a lot of the time, thats why photography isn’t a good example of evidence. as much as i like to think ghosts exist, i’m still skeptical. and i just don’t know what to believe in as far as some type of god or whatnot, i doubt there is. which makes it weird since i’m into ghost shows n stuff. i think things can be easily faked on those type of shows, and wannabe ghost hunters prob. just hear any old sound and get their hopes of hearing something they have been looking for. like, oh oh i got some voice! i dont know, until i’m actually there seeing something or hearing something, then i just have to be skeptical on the whole thing…

  16. This was not Nathaniel White’s home, he never lived there. It was abandoned LONG before the murders took place, he used this as a dumping ground but its not clearly known whether the murders took place here. And, I would not recommend going there now considering the place is literally falling apart and you will wind up falling right through the floor.

  17. I went to the house two days ago after reading about it online. While i was waiting to be picked up by my nieces, Lauren & Samantha and her b/f Eric, I was fine. I suddenly felt hot and sweaty and I threw up. Lauren came to the door and felt like someone was holding the knob from the inside. We agreed, it knows we are coming.
We got there and the house is indeed falling down. As soon as we walked in the front door, Lauren said she felt like she had been slammed with evil. The first room on the right, when you walk in the entrance is collaspsing and its really dangerous. If you view it from the outside of the house on that side, you can see it is really falling down.
In the pink bedroom upstairs, we got lots of orbs in several pictures and in others we took at the same time, we got no orbs. The pink room also gave everyone a feeling of evil. I didnt go in the attic, but my niece did. She felt it up there, too. I saw pictures of the attic and it looks like the most intact part of the house. From the outside, the attic window in the back creeped me out.
We went down to the pond and also into the barn that is half fallen down already.
I don’t understand why the place isn’t knocked down or boarded up, it’s definately a safety hazzard, esp. if you go at night. We went in the afternoon and the rooms downstairs were very dark.
The pictures with the orbs are great, but believe what you want to believe they are, it doesn’t matter to us!
I am going to go back with my boyfriend, but again, it will be in the light of day.

  18. This is true what Debbie posted. I am her niece, After my cousin Samantha and her boyfriend had driven us to Aunt debbies house I got out the car with my key. I got to the door and went to put the key in but as I turned it, the door knob moved the other direction and was shaking, I pulled back in belief that it was Debbie opening it herself. The door stopped so i unlocked it and looked around the door but Debbie wasnt there, she was upstairs washing dishes and when I told her, she proceeded to tell me about her getting sick. We made jokes saying the house knew we were coming, were not strangers to being messed with like that. As we all pulled up to the house, Eric my cousins boyfriend and I were the first to head up the steps, He stopped dead in his tracks when he got to the door. (You do feel like the house is expecting you and watching you.) I jumped through the door excited and instantly you get hit with a feeling of horror, the house feels like pure evil! It was a very hot day and one dark room in the house was FREEZING cold, which ended up being the room with the strongest and biggest orb, wich cannot be mistaken for dust by anyone. I went upstairs with the camera and proceeded to take the pictures looking for any sign(I tend to become a smartass while ghost hunting :) ) in anycase I kept asking is anyone here and heard a creak in the pink room so i headed in there with the camera flashing away ,, then into a room filled with vines and branches which gave a feeling of ” hmm…this was not a good room…AT ALL” then proceeded up the attic…I didnt go too far, as soon as you go up the steps you feel a warning like stab in you, i took one maybe two pics then followed the feeling and got the hell out of there. My aunt and I went around the pond and the cow barn, the feelings you experience just from walking by are most uncomfortable.
Nobody can go to that house and say they didnt get frightened or feel a presence, It is a very interesting place but you must go there in respect for the dead.

  19. Getting “orbs” in photos is probably dust particles, asbestos, something like that considering the house is old as dirt and falling down. Unless you get video of an orb flying all over the place; then I’m afraid people aren’t going to believe orbs as a ghost. But the rest of the stuff sounds pretty creepy. i’d just watch with going there because cops know of that house and people trespassing there.

  20. Brian do you live on this page?lol, Its true its a risk going to this house for all the above reasons. As for the orbs, like we said it depends what you believe im sure most of what we got are dust but the huge glowing one cannot be mistaken, its not just white its a few glows.

  30. This was my 2nd time visiting the farm house, and even though I personally have never walked inside, I do have to say that I got a very eerie feeling each time. I was there tonight, and I walked in front of the house to have some pics taken, just to see what would come out, and I have to say honestly I suddenly got to feeling not so well. Yes everyone has their own beliefs and is entitled to their own opinion. But I have to say, I don’t know what it is, but there is definitely something odd going on there.

  32. My friend Phil and I live in the local area. We heard about this house through this very website here. We were there last night. and earlier today. This is my personal experience:
We pull up to the house (around 1:00am) and just being in the very presence of it is chilling. We saw a port-a-jon directly across the road from it. We thought that was very interesting. Since we were in Phil’s car, he turned around in the driveway at the end of the road (strange house there too). As we pull up to the house on the opposite side of the road, the feeling of uneasiness intensifies. We stay in the car (we were kind of chicken) and we shine our flashlight into the windows and doors of the house. We didn’t see or hear anything. We weren’t really expecting to anyway. As it started to rain, we hit up a few other spot near there like The Salesian School In Goshen, NY… But I digress…
We go there the next day (which was today) at around 1:30pm. As we ease down the hill in my Saturn, we see that the port-a-jon is gone and that a Toyota Sienna minivan is parked just outside the house on the side of the road. As we drive up to the house and park it, the Minivan decides to turn around and head in the direction in which we just came. Before it came to pass us on the road, we get out and the person driving the minivan rolls down his window. We walk over to him and as we do we see that they have a professional-grade video camera mounted on the inside of the van peering out the (now open) sliding door of the van. “Just so you guys know…” He starts, “There’s some f***in’ hillbillies over there yelling at us and telling us to leave.” There was a small film crew of three in the van; The driver, which was a young guy (20-30 years old), a “person” in the back with the camera (he was pretty indistinguishable) and a young girl (18-30 years old…?) in the passenger seat. It was hard to tell her age because she didn’t look up at all. Her head was buried in her lap with her hair draped over her face in which she was holding with her hands… Almost as if she were crying or didn’t want us to see her face. So we asked them what they were doing there and he replied that they were “shooting a movie” and that they had “already been there a few days before”. I think they said something about getting in a few extra shots to wrap up their footage. We would’ve had a longer conversation, but we were cut short when they driver said “Oh, that’s those f***in’ hillbillies now. They’re gonna yell and scream at you if you don’t leave now.” As they drive away, we look down the dead end road where that strange house was, and here they come: A sky blue SUV with about four to five sixty-year-old men and women (2 men, 2 women…?) comin’ down the road towards us. Phil and I hop into my car calmly. The SUV passes us and sort of “chases” the film crew out of there at a very disappointing speed of about 10mph. Phil and I tag right behind them to show that we are leaving too.
After going to the Dunkin’ Doughnuts right up the road. We decide to go back. On our way back there, we see a cop car leaving the scene just before we turned onto the road again. I guess the “hillbillies” called the cops while we were away…? Anyhow, we continue on and park it in front of the house again. Phil and I just sit in the car for a while looking into the openings of the house, minding our own business. We weren’t there 10 minutes when I look into my mirror and notice a white old SUV (which could be easily mistaken as a white pick-up truck) blazing down the road towards us. The only thing that I thought was ‘oh, this is that “white pick-up truck” that one of the previous posters on this forum were talking about.’ The driver doesn’t hesitate to pull up right behind us, stop, and lay on the horn, screaming and yelling at us all the way. “WHY THE HELL WON’T YOU LEAVE US ALONE!? YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE?! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?! ARE YOU LOST?! I CAN SHOW YOU THE WAY OUTTA HERE YOU PUNKS!!” After about a whole minute of Phil and I ignoring them, I decide to pull over even more onto the side of the road than I was before. Again, the SUV pulls right alongside of my car and continues their fightin’ words. After about 20 whole seconds of Phil and I ignoring them completely ( When i say “ignore them” I mean WE DIDN’T EVEN MAKE EYE CONTACT), I throw the car into reverse and ever so slowly drive away from them. Right before we got too far away from their vehicle, the man in the passenger seat leaned out and spat on the hood of my car. We had a good laugh over that one.
As we drive away the last time, we turn off of the road, and we pass another cop car and a state trooper en route (we assume) to our previous location at the house.
We’re planning on going back there in about a month.

  34. ok, first off, nethaniel white never lived there, 2nd, I know the ppl who own the property, the lady had died like years ago, the last ppl to live there was a friend of the family back in the 80’s, 3rd, you gotto be nuts to go inside because of years of neglect and rot from termites. anyway, also would like to add that just because ppl died there doesn’t constitute it as being haunted, I am a believer, but also am a firm skeptic, don’t believe everything you hear, just because you have pics with orbs in them don’t mean they’re ghosts. same as the selesian school, I lived directly across from it, and before they closed it down , they tried to turn it into a youth center. I’ve heard stories but never were they confirmed. it’s a romantic thing to think of an old delapitated building to be haunted, I feel thats what adds to the mystique of the place of interest. the only thing creepy about the salesian school is the cemetery and the alter. now onto the hillcrest manor. the hotel is no longer there. the place was burned to the ground and the police suspect arson. the perp tried 3 times before they sucseeded. the reason why the hotel was closed is because of mafia dealings and a scandelous murder there. although nothing was proved. the owner of the hillcrest commited suicide on aug 14, 1989, or close to that date, nowhere near the property. the hillcrest was closed in the early 80’s with most of the buildings fuctional enemeties intact. of coarse, ppl looking for ghosts in the building cleaned it out of all the valuables and wall coverings, it actually had purple velvet on the walls as wall paper. the same ppl who owned the le`mascera`de in goshen also owned the hillcrest, well one of the partners. that building too is old and creepy, and also closed for sale. there are two buildings on that property, the chateau was the living quarters, completely made of stone, then theres the banquet hall/ bar/hotel. if you want to check out a great haunted location in goshen go to the old horse track in goshen, it’s buildings are no longer there but the hauntings are supposed to be. it is said that phantom horses and jockeys roam around a track no longer there, and you hear strange noises. another haunted place in goshen is the slate hill cemetery . alot of famouse ppl of the founders of orange county are intered there, and because the county jail is in goshen, alot of the county undesirable ppl are intered there as well.theres actually a tomb with the phrase “good riddance” inscribed on the headstone. it is said that a well known pedophile is buried there that tortured and mutilated his victim children. is it possible this man is haunting his grave? possibly.

  42. Yeah I did, it doesn’t look like anything besides dust particles. Unless u captured video and the orb is going all over the place and is in a different flight pattern than the other dust than I would think it was something but the building is old, condemned so there will be plenty of “orbs” in photos.

  43. i know, but i thought it was odd that pictures taken one after the other in the same room, that some would have them and some wouldnt. the dust cant settle that fast…but you are probably right. still and all, its a nice adrenalin rush.

  48. I went to the Nathaniel White house this afternoon with my boyfriend. We were bored and decided to check it since we heard that it was haunted. We both are very sensitive when it comes to feeling presenses. I have to say knowing the history proir to visiting made me creeped out from the beginning. We tried to scope out the area finding the best place to enter. The basement was flooded with water which turned to ice but we decided to stay away, The back door was wide open but it opened into a room that is now caved into the basement. We entered the back door and went to the right hand side where there was a doorway into a more sturdy floor. Once inside we both felt nothing. There is no evil presence there at all. But the building is a fun thing to explore. Just if you decide to visit the home be very careful. There were a few points where we could hear the floor boards cracking. The upstairs attic is probally the most stable part of the home. Not a safe place to be! Also the barn outside was a really neat place to walk through, kinda creepy with all the shoes we found there that looked to be many many years old.
    Have fun, BE SAFE!
