Captain Black No Stars vs Rasta4Eyes – “Boss Sounds of the Boom Bust”

Record Label: Do the Dog Records
Genre: Ska
Band Links: www.myspace.com/captainblacknostars, www.myspace.com/rastafoureyesuk

Captain Black No Stars and Rasta4eyes released a split CD on the excellent Do the Dog Records last year. The first 4 tracks are from Captain Black No Stars, who hail from King’s Lynn, UK. The band has a dirty reggae/ 2 tone sound and I’m not sure if I like them more than Rasta 4 Eyes. Both bands are decent though and worth checking out.

Richard Marvin – “Surrogates”

Record Label: Lakeshore Records
Genre: Film Score
Buy on Amazon.com

Surrogates stars Bruce Willis and is a sci-fi movie that came out in 2009. I still haven’t seen yet (even though its sitting on my DVD shelf). I’ll watch it eventually; the movie didn’t really get good reviews though. The movie revolves around a college student murder linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase un-flawed robotic versions of themselves. All righty.

Joseph LoDuca – “Leverage”

Record Label: La-La-Land Records
Genre: Film Score
Buy on Amazon.com

Leverage is the hit TNT show starring Timothy Hutton, Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf and others. The show is about a team of con-artists, thieves, computer experts as they right the wrongs in big business and government. I always thought the concept of the show was cool, but I never got around to watching it.

Carter Burwell – “A Serious Man”

Record Label: Lakeshore Records
Genre: Film Score
Buy on Amazon.com

A Serious Man is one of the latest films from The Coen Brothers. It stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Sari Lennick, Fred Melamed, and Richard Kind. It’s about an ordinary man who is trying to find balance and understanding in the world. I haven’t seen the movie but I’m not sure I’m going to. It doesn’t seem like a movie I would enjoy. The Coen Brothers movies are hit or miss with me; sometimes I like them and sometimes I don’t.

Hoods – “Pit Beast”

Record Label: I Scream Records

Hoods’ latest tough guy hardcore album is called “Pit Beast’ which is on I Scream Records right now. The label is really signing some cool acts lately, Life of Agony being the latest. Hoods were on Eulogy Recordings for a little bit but I Scream Records is a good fit as well.

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – “The Wages”

Record Label: Side One Dummy
Genre: Blues
Band Link: www.bigdamnband.com

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is a band I like listening to when I put on their CDs, but they aren’t something I normally listen to. The last release & debut on Side One Dummy was very good! Their newest Side One Dummy release comes out May 25th 2010 and I’m sure they will get even more fans from this release. It also helps that they are playing the entire Warped Tour this summer as well.

Tony Sly – “12 Song Program”

Record Label: Fat Wreck Chords
Genre: Acoustic
Band Link: www.myspace.com/tonyslymusic
Buy on Amazon.com

Many punk rock musicians and singers (i.e. Tony, Joey Cape, Nikola Sarcevic) strip things down and do a bare bones solo album. Many of them do it acoustically, which I don’t mind since I like that music as well. Tony Sly has been the frontman for No Use For A Name for about 20 years now and shows no signs of slowing down. To break up the norm, he does acoustic folk albums like this one, “12 Song Program.”

NOFX – “Cokie the Clown”

Record Label: Fat Wreck Chords
Genre: Punk Rock
Band Link: www.nofxofficialwebsite.com
Buy on Amazon.com

Cokie the Clown is the latest EP from NOFX. Well I guess I shouldn’t call this “latest” since this was released back in November 2009. Hey, I’m a busy guy ok! Anyway, Cokie the Clown’s album cover features Fat Mike looking like a clown, with Alice Cooper eyes. The music video is amusing because Fat Mike squirts all his friends with exploding powdered dust. I know I’d be pissed if that happened to me but what are you gonna do, its Fat Mike.
