Similar to label mate the Austerity Program, Pelican plays experimental indie but with more of an emphasis on heavy guitar riffs, rather than a progressive take on the entire song structure itself (rhythms, tempo, tension/release, etc). And actually, that makes them a lot more boring. I'd rather hear a cacophony of sounds than the same guitar note being hit over and over again.
