The Namesake was directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) and tells the story of an Indian-American family trying to find their way in the New York. After coming together via an arranged marriage, Ashima and Ashoke moved from her native Calcutta to New York. When they give birth to son Gogol (Kal Penn, Harold & Kumar) and daughter Sonia, the family soon settles in the suburbs. Fast forward 20 years and both Gogol and Sonia disappoint their parents by having little interest in their ancestry or respect for the sacrifices that have been made for them. Gogol's desire to change his name, and his relationship with a wealthy American girl (Jacinda Barrett, The Last Kiss) also place a strain on the family.
