I wasn't sure, at first, if I should be reviewing the fourth season of Alias. After all, I am an Alias virgin, having never seen even a single episode, and I wasn't sure if I would be hopelessly lost within the intricate plotlines of this well-received action/drama. Then, a few minutes into the opening episode, Jennifer Garner's character Sydney runs in slow motion wearing a naughty schoolgirl outfit, and at that point I realized it didn't matter that I'd never seen the show before. True, there are a lot of intricate plotlines that probably require knowledge of past seasons to be fully understood. But again, in the opening episode, our hero Sydney is convinced in five seconds flat to work for a guy who was apparently the evil supervillain of earlier seasons. When that happened, I realized that it probably wouldn't make entirely too much sense anyway.
Am I making the show sound shallow? Perhaps. It's big, cheesy and filled with plotholes and bizarre logic (or lack thereof), and yet I loved it. It's a fast-paced, thrilling spy show that actually bothers with stuff like character development. There are a lot of totally ass-kicking fights, cliffhanger stunts, humor, and Jennifer Garner in hot revealing outfits. If you think these aren't the ingredients of a fine forty-odd minute episodic entertainment, then you need to be kicked in the shins immediately for daring to disagree with me.
And heck, all action and titillation aside, there's even some good acting in this thing. It's like a funtastic bonus to an otherwise great entertainment. Hooray!
So what is the plot? Ah, never mind. It doesn't really matter. Let's just say it involves spies and bad guys and junk. And isn't that all you really need to know? Yes. Yes it is. Go check it out, because I said so, and I'm always right. |
