Ford: Town Should Pay Almost $17 Million Toward Toxic Cleanup
RINGWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- Ford Company wants the federal government to force Ringwood to pay millions of dollars toward the cleanup of a toxic waste dump.
The automaker said the Passaic County town is violating a federal order that it help the automaker.
Ford's attorney said the town has "accrued penalties under the order of nearly $17 million."
Ringwood officials say that figur
e isn't fair. The town said it's working with Ford to come up with an appropriate sum.
During the 1960s and early 1970s, Ford dumped paint sludge and other toxic waste in an area near the New York border.
Ford cleaned it up. But residents complained of paint sludge left in the open.
Last year, the site was put back on the Superfund list.
