Man spills coffee, drives over neighbor
A Greenlawn woman walking near her home was fatally injured Monday night when a neighbor, while driving his car, spilled a cup of coffee in his lap and lost control of the car, which struck her, the Suffolk police said.
Kate Porto, 84, was walking south on Oberlon Drive when she was hit by the car at 7:55 p.m. Monday. Porto, of Oberlon Drive, was taken to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later, the police said.
The driver of the car, Bradley Dorman, 48, of Bowdon Road, Greenlawn, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu north on Oberlon Drive when he spilled the coffee in his lap and became distracted, the police said. His car veered off the road and hit a mailbox, and when he recovered control of the car and started to pull back onto Oberlon Drive the vehicle struck Porto, the police said.
