Laser beam attack on passenger jet pilots
A QANTAS jet carrying 111 passengers had a laser shone directly at the cockpit as it made a landing approach over Brisbane's inner north last night.
Police were called after the pilots on a flight from Canberra to Brisbane reported the laser beam.
The pilots of QF958 alerted police after the flight had landed safely at Brisbane's domestic terminal about 7.15pm (AEST).
The Boeing 737-400 was flying over Herston when the incident happened.
It sparked a police search of the Herston area and in the grounds of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
Last night's case comes two weeks after a legislative amendment was passed in Federal Parliament in response to a rise in the number of such attacks on aircraft.
The amendments to the Civil Aviation Act defined the practice as separate to other offences that threaten the safety of an aircraft.
