LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Despite critical panning, audiences flocked to "Chicken Little," making it the white meat of choice for moviegoers this weekend. Disney's first solo CGI project -- starring "Scrubs" star Zach Braff as the voice of the good egg who keeps getting brained -- opened with a hefty $40.1 million to make it the top film this weekend. According to early estimates, it earned an average of $10,970 for each of its 3,654 screens.
Following on the chicken's scrawny heels is the debut of Sam Mendes "Jarhead." Audiences checked out the Gulf War drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and a strategically placed Santa hat to the tune of $28.8 million. It earned the highest per screen average for the weekend, with $11,945 for the 2,411 screens in release.
Serial killer film "Saw II" dropped from the previous weekend's top spot to third with $17.2 mil, while "Legend of Zorro" and "Prime" similarly fell two places apiece to No. 4 and No. 5, earning $10 and $5.3 mil, respectively.
Rounding out the Top 12 is "Dreamer" ($4.8 mil), "Good Night, and Good Luck" ($3.1 mil), "The Weather Man" ($2.9 mil), "Shopgirl" ($2.5 mil), "Flightplan" ($2.3 mil), "North Country" ($2.1 mil) and "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" ($2 mil).
"Shopgirl," based on Steve Martin's novella of the same name, jumped over 400 percent after increasing its theater count to 493 sites, averaging $5,120 per screen. Another film opening in limited release that's enjoying box office success is "Capote," starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as the titular author. The small film earned approximately $6,080 on each of its 183 screens.
Overall, the Top 12 films this week earned $121.2 million, 39.3 percent higher than the previous week's top films, but 9.9 percent less than the Top 12 from the same weekend last year when Disney/Pixar's "The Incredibles" opened with $70 million.
Next week, audiences can pay $10 to catch 50 Cent's acting debut in "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," blast off with "Zathura" or see Jennifer Aniston risk her life and marriage in "Derailed."
These are estimates by Exhibitor Relations, which tracks box office receipts daily. Check back Monday afternoon for final figures. |
