Prince of Persia receives movie treatment, courtesy of Disney
Plans for a 2008 movie release of the much loved gaming trilogy look hopeful, courtesy of Disney and Pirates of the Caribbean veteran Jerry Bruckheimer.
Video game to movie releases aren't anything new, and Prince of Persia is one of many hoping to light up cinemas screens in the near future. Discussion with Disney about a silver screen adaptation have been ongoing for some time, but new information about the project has surfaced courtesy of a recent Jim Hill Media blog post.
Although little has been officially confirmed, the blog details strong ambitions for the series as an ongoing movie franchise, most likely a trilogy. Due to the involvement of Jerry Bruckheimer, the man behind the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean movie and owner of the PoP film license, many critics believe that Disney intend for it be something of a spiritual successor to the movie.
This view has also been expressed by the movie's executive producer John August.
"Neither Jordan [Mechner (creator of the original game, and responsible for the series' PS2 reinvention) ] or I wanted to directly translate the game to screen, a la Resident Evil.," he stated, "Rather, the goal is to make something like Pirates of the Caribbean, swashbuckling and exciting in an entirely new world."
The movie is set to hopefully launch in cinemas in 2008, but an official release date has yet to be set. |
