RUMOR: Johnny Depp to play the Riddler in Batman 3?

JOHNNY DEPP is tipped to play BATMAN villain THE RIDDLER in the next installment of the comic book movie series.

After the huge success of The Dark Knight, which has taken $440 million (GBP220 million) at the worldwide box office, producers are confident they can convince Depp to take on Christian Bale's Batman on the big screen.

And, according to the National Enquirer, studio bosses also want Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman onboard to play another of the Caped Crusader's arch-foe, the Penguin.

The Riddler was played on the small screen in the 1960s by Frank Gorshin and in 1995 movie Batman Forever by Jim Carrey. Hoffman would be stepping into the shoes of TV and movie Penguins Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito. A source tells the Enquirer, "(Producers) are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own. "And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman."

Considering the original source on this one we are going to file this under the RUMOR catagory for now.

I dunno, when I heard Ledger and Eckhardt, I thought, goddamn those are unexpected but PERFECT choices. This? This sounds exactly like fanboy rumor and nothing more. *shrug*

Wouldn't Depp as the Mad Hatter be the exact same role as Willy Wonka? Maybe he could be the Mad Hatter in a Batman movie around the sixth one when Judd Apatow takes over. Steve Carell would make a great Man Bat...

I think that's a bad idea. He may fit in Tim Burton's surrealist world but in Nolan's gritty psuedo-realistic world someone with much more subtlety would be better suited. He doesn't fit with Nolan's directing style to me.

I think this is false because Nolan isn't even signed on for the next one yet. So therefore, no storyline or characters in place yet. It's all wishful thinking and think Depp wouldnt be good as Riddler. but then again, I had my doubts in the beginning with heath ledger as the Joker.

There's a more solid rumor that Tim Burton is going to do Alice in Wonderland with Depp playing the Mad Hatter.
