According to Variety, Simon Wincer is set to direct the Dances With Wolves sequel, entitled 'The Holy Road.' author Michael Blake wrote the screenplay for both movies, as well as the novels that the movies are based on.
Story picks up 11 years after "Wolves" as the Comanche tribe is in steady decline and the threat of white settlers looms. The title "Holy Road" refers to the transcontinental railroad, which is a symbol of the clash of civilizations.
Kevin Costner is not involved with directing or acting in the movie. Simon Wincer has recently directed Spielberg's 'Into the West' and has also directed 'Lonesome Dove.'
I read this book and it's quite dark, depressing & grim. Not sure how well it will translate to film though. But I guess that sums up the era of the Native Americans. - Bryan
