Port Washington, NY (May 22, 2006) – This June, KOCH Lorber Films proudly presents the critically-acclaimed 2006 U.S. theatrical release The Syrian Bride on DVD. The winner of more international awards than any Israeli film to date, this cinematic masterpiece from director Eran Riklis (Cup Final, Zohar) presents a deeply moving story of family set against the backdrop of political turbulence in the Middle East. Hailed as a "rare feat" by The Hollywood Reporter and lauded as a film that "exudes affection for its characters and their culture" by The Village Voice, The Syrian Bride will be available on June 6, 2006 for a suggested retail price of $29.98 on DVD.
Shot on location in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, The Syrian Bride is a powerful film about physical, mental and emotional borders and the courage it takes to cross them. Featuring an excellent ensemble cast, it stars Hiam Abbass (Munich, Paradise Now, Free Zone), Makram J. Khoury (Munich, The Body), Clara Khoury (Rana's Wedding), Ashraf Barhom (Paradise Now) and Julie-Ann Roth (The Messenger, Queen Margot).
On the border between Israel and Syria, a young bride faces an uncertain future. Once she crosses into Syria to be married, she will never be allowed back to her beloved family in the Druze village of Majdal Shams. While her loved ones, the government and military officials gather on both sides of the border, a profound drama unfolds revealing humor and humanity – passion and heartbreak.
The Syrian Bride boasts a myriad of captivating DVD extras including an insightful commentary track with director Eran Riklis, an interview with star Hiam Abbass and an in-depth "making of" featurette. Also included on the disc is the original international trailer as well as the U.S theatrical trailer. The film is presented in 16x9 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital audio.
An international box office hit, The Syrian Bride has played theatrically in 40 U.S. markets, grossing over $300,000 to date. A Grand Prix recipient at the Montreal World Film Festival and an award-winner at the Locarno, Bastia and Flanders International Film Festivals, it was nominated for seven awards by the Israeli Film Commission including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director.
The Syrian Bride has also received outstanding reviews from critics around the country. Stephen Holden of The New York Times praised the film for its "dry, deadpan humor" and "excellent ensemble" while Sean Axmaker of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer called it "affecting, compelling and downright moving." Newsday praised the film as "enchanting" and Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times cited its "compassion and sympathy for the humanity of its characters, no matter who they are, or on what side of these multiple issues they turn out to be."
