The highly anticipated follow up to critically acclaimed LP Sand & Snow, the bands’ new self-titled album A Silent Film was recorded in the band’s hometown over a five-week period following the Secret Rooms tour. “It was good to work from home and get back in touch with ourselves and our families after 3-4 years of touring,” says Walker. Very much a homegrown recording, the album was written in Stevenson’s house where the two invited friends from across the UK and US who had played with them on tour to help with the recording. Sam Williams (Supergrass, The Go! Team, The Weeks), who recorded A Silent Film’s debut album The City That Sleeps was on mixing duties, and the album was mastered at Metropolis studios in London.

For their third full-length album the band aspired to write and record a collection of songs that had their own identity and didn’t drift off to follow current trends. “Our mission was to please ourselves first and foremost, while never compromising our initial instincts,” says Stevenson. “Pushing ourselves further than we have before has allowed us to write the kind of music we can see ourselves enjoying playing live more than ever.” Walker notes “When we played a couple of low key shows in London and Oxford during the making of the album we knew we were onto something from the audience reaction.”

“‘Lightning Strike’ feels like the song we have been trying to write for years,” says Stevenson. Energetic and uptempo, optimistic but thoughtfully written, it speaks about longing for a meaningful relationship but teases you with teenage desires. Walker adds, “The song was a very late addition to the album, so late in fact that the live strings and vocals had to be recorded before everything else due to scheduling conflicts. The drums, bass and guitars were then recorded live in a single day as an overdub, it was mixed the next day and away it went.”

“We cannot wait to play this album live,” says Stevenson. “Matthew Wilcox will be joining us onstage and we’ll be playing as a five piece now as the music has become more demanding. The band is growing along with the stage show.”

Formed in Oxford, UK, by Robert Stevenson (vocals/piano) and Spencer Walker (drums), A Silent Film’s expansive and poetic pop-rock sound has garnered comparisons to everyone from Coldplay to The Killers to U2. Collectively, they create an unyielding positivity in their lyrics and sound, a spirited and romantic musicality that belies an unashamedly upbeat pop attitude. The band self-produced their last LP Sand & Snow, inspired by an impulsive tryst with Americana, yielding the singles “Harbour Lights”, and “Danny, Dakota and the Wishing Well” to build on the success of 2010’s anthemic debut single “You Will Leave A Mark”. Earlier this year, the band followed up Sand & Snow with the release of New Year EP and the sold out Secret Rooms Tour – a series of unique and intimate ‘in-the-round’ performances across the US. Over the years, the band has toured with such acts as OneRepublic, Civil Twilight, Smashing Pumpkins and Temper Trap as well as festival performances including Glastonbury and Firefly.
