One of indie-rock's premier bands, Portland trio Sleater-Kinney, announced Tuesday that it will break up after its summer tour. The band's final concert is scheduled to be an Aug. 4 appearance at the Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park.
"After 11 years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus," the trio of Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss announced on their Web site, www.sleater-kinney.com. "The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings." In the three-paragraph statement, the band did not offer an explanation, but thanked its fans: "It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile."
Sleater-Kinney emerged out of the early '90s riot grrrl movement, a loose coalition of female punk bands, to make seven acclaimed albums, including last year's masterful "The Woods."
