(Chart Attack) The Sex Pistols' legendary bootleg album, Spunk, is scheduled to be re-released in the U.K. on July 17 by Castle Music/Sanctuary Records.
This reissue of 12 of the Pistols' earliest demos coincides with the 30-year anniversary of the recording, and is the first proper release of the LP that unofficially hit the streets in 1977. The new version of Spunk will be in its original format, complete with spoken word audio clips between the songs, for the first time.
Spunk is the 2006 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees' only recording featuring the original Sex Pistols lineup of Glen Matlock (bass), Steve Jones (guitar), Johnny Rotten (vocals) and Paul Cook (drums). Matlock left the band shortly before they recorded Never Mind The Bollocks.
Spunk comes from three sessions with recording engineer Dave Goodman. The first demos — including "Seventeen," "Satellite," "No Feelings," "Just Me (I Wanna Be Me)" and "Submission" — were recorded at the Denmark Street Rehearsal Rooms in London's Soho district in July 1976.
The second session took place at Wessex Studios in Highbury, North London in October 1976 that resulted in an early take of "Anarchy In The U.K." The third and final session took place at Gooseberry Studios in Soho in January, 1977. It was during these final demo sessions where the band recorded the first takes of "God Save The Queen," "Problems," "Pretty Vacant," "Liar," "Who Was It (EMI)" and "New York (Looking For A Kiss)."
Spunk will be released on CD and 1,000 numbered copies will also be made available on vinyl. The CD version will include three bonus tracks: "Anarchy In The U.K.," "Pretty Vacant" and "No Fun."
A remastered version of Never Mind The Bollocks will be released on July 11.
