The New Amsterdams on the road with The Weakerthans

(June 20, 2006) - THE NEW AMSTERDAMS have found a way to have the best of both worlds. The Lawrence, KS-based band loves to tour, but also loves their families and with some careful planning - have multiple 2-3 week headlining tours scheduled throughout the entire year.

The New Amsterdams' leader, vocalist–guitarist Matt Pryor, is joined on tour by Dustin Kinsey on guitar and vocals, bassist Eric McCann, drummer Bill Belzer and Jason Rich on lap steel and guitar.

"We've been biding our time, waiting until the songs were right and the band was ready," says Pryor. "I'm really excited for people to see this, it's like nothing we've ever done before."

The New Amsterdams embarked on their first headlining tour since 2003 in support of their fourth New Ams' disc, Story Like A Scar (Vagrant, 3/21/06) in mid-March. They played Noisepop in SF, SXSW in Austin, Coachella in Indio and have a Sunday, August 6th date at Lollapalooza booked. The band recently wrapped a tour with Augustana and most recently, The Lashes, and will be supporting The Weakerthans on select dates in July.

Story Like A Scar, the group's fifth studio album, was recorded in Nashville last year with producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Freedy Johnston, Elvis Costello). The disc's 10 tracks evoke a sense of place, mainly the band's Lawrence, KS home and the characters that inhabit that world. Highlights include "Turn Out The Light" – about the life of a touring musician; "Bad Liar," – which deals with settling the past and moving on, and the standout closing track, "A Small Crusade."

Adds Pryor, "Story Like a Scar is 10 steps forward from anything I've ever done, which has everything to do with this band. We found our collective voice with this record."
