One of the latest albums I’ve been listening to non-stop is Vancouver’s Jordan Klassen. An indie singer/songwriter musician that I can see blowing up in the States if enough ears decide to listen to him. What will it take, having his music being featured on an iPod commercial or something?

Jordan has an unique singing style. He sings in a dream-like, quiet voice but then reaches these high-pitch falsettos that sounds different. If I had to give a comparison to Jordan’s music, its somewhat similar to Great Lake Swimmers, Rogue Wave and Sufjan Stevens. Since this is indie music, expect lots of whistling but not as obnoxious as other indie bands.

“Sweet Chariot” begins the album and you already can tell that the album is something different than you normally hear…at least for me anyway. “Piano Brother” is a more upbeat track, and one of the standouts on the album. If I had to pick my favorite track though, it has to be “The Horses are Stuck.” It’s something about that song that I have to listen to it over and over. It starts off soft and subtle, and then picks up over time during the chorus.

“Go To Me” comes close to being my favorite, and you might have heard this song on Jordan’s Kindness EP that came out last year. It’s another song that starts off slow, with the ukulele playing. Then it picks up steam and Jordan is singing loudly, there’s whistling, harmonized chorus, it’s got everything you want in a song. “Balcony” is another song that stands out for the many layers the song has. The haunting “haaaaaaaa” during the song makes it stay in my mind, and I’ll end up singing that to myself throughout the day.

The rest of the album is solid as the first half. The way the production is on Jordan’s vocals, it’s very pleasing to the ears and great for my morning commute in the pitch black. The lyrics and the style of the songs feels very fantasy-esque, if that makes any sense. I don’t know what it is that makes Jordan Klassen stand out from other indie musicians but I just really love this album. I think it’s a perfect album.

Bottom Line: An indie artist I can support and appreciate!
