“Poets Were My Heroes” is the first Fat Wreck Chords full length from former Choking Victim front man Ezra Kire. Gone are the ska-core days of Choking Victim, having been replaced with a sound reminiscent of “Sandinista” era Clash.

I would have to say that I was a little surprised to hear more melodic punk as opposed to a more hardcore sound, but I give props to Morning Glory taking that route. There is also a lot of variety in sounds…not just punk. Songs like “Divide By” are very riff-heavy while “Orphan’s Holiday” is an acoustic diddy that builds up into a heavy rock sound. Morning Glory show their influences and weren’t afraid to throw them right at you. The songwriting is also reminiscent of everyman storytelling of bands like the Dropkick Murphys and the Bouncing Souls. The lyrics are very relatable in that way.

While there are a good variety of sounds and influences, I really didn’t find those couple of songs that stand out and demand repeat listens. Overall though, “Poets Were My Heroes” is a consistent album from start to finish, even if it’s a little schizophrenic.

Bottom Line: A decent punk album that leans more towards the hard rock than the hard punk. The Clash would be proud.
Notable Tracks: Life’s A Long Revenge, Quemar las Fronteras, Everything’s A Song (To Me)
