Didn’t take long to capitalize on the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings I suppose. I’m usually a fan of The City of Prague Philharmonic stuff but isn’t this being released rather soon for this type of best of compilation? Especially when they are really only including 3 tracks from the Hobbit and the rest are from the Lord of the Rings. If anything, just include the LOTR music and wait a bit for the Hobbit to finish up.

But with that said, if you’re looking for yet another Lord of the Rings greatest hits compilation, I guess this one is worth considering. The Hobbit tracks are first (Over Hill, Thunder Battle, Dreaming of Bag End) and “Over Hill” is clearly my favorite since that’s basically one of the Hobbit main themes. For the most part, the tracks picked for the LOTR parts are spot on but some things altered slightly which gives it a nice change of pace of listening to these scores regularly for the last 10 years. “Concerning Hobbits” is and always be one of my favorite score pieces of any movie. Just so beautifully done and makes me want to find some nice countryside to live in and make a Hobbit hole home.

Towards the end of this compilation, they begin to spread out in terms of score pieces from the last movies. Fellowship got 5 tracks, The Two Towers got 3, and Return of the King got 4. The last track is “The Fields of Pelennor” but why does the album end there? Clearly they could have done something towards the end like “Grey Havens.” But enough nitpicking with me. The people that really want to own this album will be the extremely dedicated Lord of the Rings and Howard Shore fans. You can just buy the full albums and get all the tracks basically…

Bottom Line: Just get the original albums
Notable Tracks: Over Hill, Dreaming of Bag End, Fellowship, Concerning Hobbits, Riders of Rohan, Forth Eorlingas/ Isengard Unleashed, The White Tree
