Louie’s second season is a bit darker than the first season. I don’t think it’s necessarily funnier than the first season but it’s still the strongest season to date. Plus, it’s the season that makes Louie stand out from other comedies on TV. There’s just nothing out there like it.

Louie is loosely based on Louis C.K.’s life. He takes parts of his life, distorts it a little bit and makes it interesting and/or funny. Basically the show is about Louie being a single Father and trying to get far by being a comedian. There’s Louis C.K.’s usual observational humor but a lot of the episodes are about raising his daughter’s, joke stealing, racist relatives, masturbating, suicide, awkward dating, traveling to Afghanistan for a USO tour and more.

If there is an episode to watch in season two, it’s the “Duckling” / USO tour episode that is an hour long. It’s just perfect. It’s that episode that made me realize how great Louis C.K. truly has become and he’s just not your typical stand-up comedian. He’s more than that. He’s become my George Carlin. A comedian I wait to hear what he will say about something and one I have to listen to all the time. Doesn’t matter if I heard the stand-ups over and over, I still laugh.

The show itself is a bit more than just a comedy though. It’s Louis C.K.’s social commentary and opinionated views that makes this show a must-see. Sure, you won’t laugh at everything but it’s not meant to be laughed at all the time. Sometimes you cringe, sometimes you laugh, sometimes you feel sorry for Louie, sometimes something happens on the show that makes you think. It’s just an excellent show that’s also beautifully shot. Just hearing Louis C.K. talk about photography & filmmaking, you can tell the man is passionate about it and knows his shit.

Just like Season 1, it’s disappointing that the show is partially censored when it comes to the “fuck” word. You can say handjob, blowjob, shit, bullshit, shitting, cum, and other so-called filthy words but FX decides to censor the word on the Blu-Ray and DVD. It’s fucking stupid pretty much. But don’t let that hinder your decision in getting this. It’s just a nuisance. Extras on the Blu-Ray include some deleted scenes, audio commentary on a few episodes (not the USO tour one which I was hoping for), and some Fox Movie Channel featurette.

If you love Louis C.K. as a comedian, or TV comedies that are random or about social events/things people don’t want to talk about, then Louie is the show for you. Do yourself a favor and watch Season 2 on Blu-Ray or DVD before Season 3 starts.
