Having Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn together is a good sight to see. The Internship is an entertaining movie but don’t expect Wedding Crashers funny though.
After Nick (Owen Wilson) and Billy (Vince Vaughn) lose their salesmen jobs, they don’t know what to do. Billy ends up submitting their applications to Google intern program and they end up getting accepted based on their weird interview. Nick and Billy end up in a summer competition with other interns, and the winning team are guaranteed Google jobs. As you can imagine, things don’t go that smoothly in the beginning but eventually things turn around for their guys and their team.
I originally watched this movie on my flight to Italy in September and I thought it was entertaining. It wasn’t outrageous or hilariously funny like Wedding Crashers was but it was decent enough. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn act well together so I think they can star in most things and I’d find their movies entertaining. The premise of the movie isn’t really believable but you just kind of go with it and accept it for what it is. After all, that’s the whole point; that these two older guys are interning for the biggest company in the world. Just like The Watch was a commercial for Costco, this one was a commercial for Google. And yes, I’d work for Google in a heartbeat!
In a way, The Internship reminds me of another Vince Vaughn movie, Dodgeball. Owen and Vince’s characters get teamed up with other intern rejects and it sort of similar to Dodgeball. It’s a bit of modern day cliche but whatever, it still works. I thought the ending was a bit lame with the way they did their final presentation. Did you really expect these characters not to get jobs at Google in the end. So besides a few movie cliches, it’s also a bit predictable in that you know what will be the final result.
The special features for the movie include audio commentary with Shawn Levy, some deleted scenes (about 8 minutes worth), and a featurette on the quidditch scene in the movie. The featurette is done in a way that’s like one of those football documentaries you’d see on ESPN or HBO. It’s about 18 minutes long and shows how grueling it can be to film a sport scene. Plus it doesn’t help that they were filming this in Atlanta and it was over 100 degrees either. I think all the hard work paid off since that’s a scene in the movie that’s memorable. The deleted scenes were forgettable except one with Will Ferrell’s character who shows up at a Halloween parade in a Boba Fett costume. Besides the special features, this Blu0Ray contains both the unrated version and the theatrical.
If you’re looking for an unbelievable funny movie, I don’t know if The Internship is that movie. I thought it had some funny moments in it, and it’s quite enjoyable but I think if you’re comparing Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn movies, Wedding Crashers was a lot better. Seeing both guys acting together is still fun and you can see why these movies are so well-liked since they have great chemistry together. The Internship is a good movie to put on during a rainy Sunday afternoon.
