Young Dubliners added a last minute addition to their crowded Fall tour dates with a stop at Mercury Lounge in NYC. I wasn’t sure if I was able to attend but thankfully the planets aligned for me to be there that night.

The last time I saw the Young Dubliners was in 2014 at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. I’m not sure if that was the last time they played here or not. They always seem to play around September, on like a late Monday or Tuesday night. Keith, the singer, joked about that last night and it’s just based on playing weekend festivals. It’s a shame because they are a fantastic live band and if they played in March when “everybody was Irish,” they would do better. But why play NYC for 40-50 people when they can sell out venues in California. The crowd last night wasn’t too bad and think Mercury Lounge is a good size venue for them. Whatever size the crowd is, Young Dubs make it a party regardless.

The band played a mixture of new-ish and old songs, like they have been doing. Their last album, Nine, was represented with songs like “Fall” “Say Anything,” “Up in the Air,” and “Seeds of Sorrow.” I particularly loved hearing “Say Anything” and later on “We The Mighty.” From their older stuff, I liked hearing “Come Back Home,” “Howaya Girls,” “Bodhran,” and a cover of the Pogues’ “Pair of Brown Eyes.” I still have yet to hear “Change The World” live and I’ve seen the band over 6 or 7 times now. For an instrumental, hearing “Bodhran” every time really pumps me up and it’s just a great tune. Chas ended up doing a solo for a few minutes and even with the people there, the crowd was getting rowdy. Keith was in the back laughing it up. A few members went off the stage at the end, but then some of them stayed. Keith joked there was a big guy, telling them to get back on stage so none of them left. They finished things up with “Rosie” and “Rocky Road to Dublin.”

The band is always a good time and one of the first, if not the first Celtic rock bands I got into around 1999/2000. They are currently on tour and if they are playing in a town near you, get your ass out to see a live band play! A good one too!
