Last time I heard Freya, they were a metal band. Now they are a ska band?!? I don't know how to break it to you Freya, but ska isn't cool anymore? You guys are going backwards, what are you guys going to be next, a swing band? Maybe after that, they are gonna turn into a bunch of hippies and sing about Nixon? With that said, the band has embraced their inner rudeboy and have completed quite the skankin' ska-punk album!
The opening track "Threads of Life & Pick It Up" starts off like Madness' "One Step Beyond." It sounds a little too similar to the song if you ask me. If they are going to do ska music, at least have the decency to write songs differently from other ska bands. The vocals are a cross between Neville Staples and Bucket from the Toasters, if you can imagine that. Even though this album is very ska, the album cover looks nothing like a ska album. The artwork is very metal or hardcore. I think if they were going to sell the whole ska thing, there needs to be Walt Jabsco or checkerboard imagery all over the album. Another track that I thought stood was the title track "Life the Curse," mainly because the horn section was really tight. They hit just about every note, and sound awesome! It makes me want to skank all over the room hearing this song! There's ten tracks overall, plus a bonus track of Freya covering "Monkey Man." This album is surprisingly good and very catchy! Pick It Up Rudebwoy! |
