Jello Biafra has been busy since the Dead Kennedys. He performed in bands like Lard, No WTO Combo, Tumor Circus, and recorded albums with DOA, Mojo Nixon, Nomeansno and The Melvins. This is his full-time time band since DK, and I’m glad he’s finally back playing music full-time! Jello is also known for his political spoken word stuff, so definitely expect a politically charged album from Biafra.

The Alternative Tentacles 30th Anniversary Incest-A-Thon features three shows running over the range of available talent at our disposal, which is mighty. Though less than a handful of labels in the punk genre have stuck it out longer, we are proud nonetheless to make it battered and bruised through the past three decades. Begun in 1979 to release Dead Kennedys’ “California Uber Alles” single, the San Francisco institution continues to release new music as well as occasional punk reissues and a breadth of styles beyond punk. The strand holding it all together is the tastes and whims of label owner Jello Biafra. Though many of Jello Biafra’s “collaborations” (Lard, No WTO Combo, Tumor Circus, & records with Melvins, DOA, Nomeansno, & Mojo Nixon) would have been called solo albums by other artists, this is his first full-time working band since Dead Kennedys, and it shows. Also on board are Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms) Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey), Billy Gould (Faith No More), & Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle).

I guess you could call this prog-crust. Noisy punky-punk in an explosive wall of sound, packed with interesting changes and directions. It’s a cacophony, but the musicianship is top-notch.

Listening to this split again after all these years is neat. Filth is still as crusty and guttural (and, frankly, meatheaded) as I remembered, but Blatz is actually more interesting than I experienced the first time around.
