Carcrashlander – “Mountains On Our Backs”

cds_carcrashlander_mountains

Record Label: Jealous Butcher Records
Genre: Indie
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Lo-fi indie with a dissonant, post-punk bent. The first track, an 8-minute marathon of out-of-tune drone, soft vocals, and slow tension-and-release hills, is… actually, better than it sounds!

Shark Speed – “Sea Sick Music”

cds_sharkspeed_seasickmusic
Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Indie
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Shark Speed combines the lackadaisically cascading single-note guitar sound of math rock with the 16th-note swagger of hipster dance-punk. The result is loose and disjointed, almost as if the musicians were in different bands.

Seizure Crypt – “Under The Gun”

Record Label: Bad Elephant Productions
Genre: Hardcore
Band Link: link

I like hardcore that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but these guys are downright goofy. In terms of lunkheadedness, they bring to mind the party antics of bands like No Redeeming Social Value, 2 Man Advantage, and early Suicidal Tendencies.

Zelazowa – “Elephants On A Mousehunt”

cds_zelazowa_elephants
Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Grunge
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Loud, chunky post-grunge with overly dramatic Dio-like singing and classic rock-like ballads. With funky drumming and bass, high-pitched vocals, and a classic rock flair, they’re sometimes reminiscent of The Music meets The Darkness. But, mostly, they’re hideous.

Marked Men – “Ghosts”

cd_markedmen_ghosts1
Record Label:
Dirtnap Records
Genre: Punk
Buy on Amazon.com

Marked Men have a really cool sound: lean, gritty pop punk revved up to breakneck speed and shot through a wind tunnel. Somehow, they’re not noisy, chaotic, or angry – in fact, they’re surprisingly straight forward and melodic.

Dendrites – “Mountain Standard Time”

Record Label:
Megalith Records
Genre: Ska
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Perhaps in homage to DC’s ska-jazz band Eastern Standard Time, Denver’s The Dendrites named their album Mountain Standard Time. Like EST, MST is a technically competent but not terribly exciting band.

Resin – “Truth Be Told”

cds_resin_truthbetold
Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Grunge
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Resin is a throwback to the toothless post-grunge radio rock of the late 90s/early 00’s, spearheaded by Creed and their ilk.

Motorik – “Klang!”

cds_motorik_klang
Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Post-Punk
Buy on Amazon.com

Motorik offers up some listless 80s post-punk, now with 50% more emotional detachment! Bands like Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Wire, and Bauhaus are clear influences, but Motorik does little to broaden the genre outside of incorporating flat-sounding dance punk/death disco.

Merit – “Arson Is For Lovers”

cds_merit_arsonisforlovers
Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Femo
Band Link: link
Buy on Amazon.com

Female-fronted emo rock with toes in power pop and melodic indie. Like many similar bands, the music is very poppy without being too songfully catchy or memorable.

Toronto’s Cold Dead Hands play middling alternarock with thick, down-key classic rock/grunge riffs.
