Gogol Bordello played a special show in New York City last night at Irving Plaza, err I mean The Fillmore AT Irving Plaza. They haven’t played Irving Plaza for a few years it seems; lately they have been playing Webster Hall. The reason why the show was special because it was a Haiti benefit show, with proceeds going to support the aid down there. If you’ve ever been to a Gogol Bordello show, you know they never call in a performance. They give it their all every time and it’s just a blast to witness! That certainly was the case with this benefit show!

Flogging Molly – Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC

Flogging Molly at Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC
Date: March 2nd 2010
Opening Bands: Frank Turner, The Architects
Band Link: www.floggingmolly.com

Flogging Molly played in New York City last night on their annual Green 17 tour. This time, the tour featured opening acts The Architects and an artist that’s quickly becoming one of my favorite musicians, Frank Turner. While the bands performed excellently, the concert experience at Hammerstein Ballroom left a lot to be desired.

Alkaline Trio / Cursive – Metro, Chicago, IL

Date: February 27th, 2010
Band Link: www.alkalinetrio.com
When it was announced that Cursive and Alkaline Trio were touring together, I think every little emo-hearted punk let out a girlish squeal. After all, it was Alkaline Trio and Cursive. Unfortunately, Saturday’s sold-out performance at Chicago’s the Metro did not exactly live up to expectations.

Castevet – Subterranean Chicago, IL

Date: January 20th, 2010
Band Link: www.myspace.com/romancastevet
Less than a year after releasing their Summer Fences EP, Castevet headlined their record release show for The Echo & The Light at Subterranean last weekend. Taking the stage after midnight, the group displayed an explosive combination of indie, emo, punk, and instrumental. It’s almost as if the group single handedly picked the best element from their favorite bands and magically placed them into their songs.

The Irish rock band The Cranberries are back, after taking a hiatus for a few years. Dolores O’Riordan and the band made a stop at Nokia Theatre in Times Square in New York City last night. The concert was sold out, and something tells me that they could have sold out another 2 shows at least.

The Ska is Dead tour made a stop at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ yesterday. The main tour features The Toasters, Mustard Plug, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Deal’s Gone Bad. For this particular show, NJ ska fans were in for a treat since a few other bands were playing like the Pilfers and Hub City Stompers. It felt like a Ska Warped Tour to me.

The Gaslight Anthem – Terminal 5, NYC

Date: October 15tgh 2009
Opening Bands: Murder By Death, Broadway Calls, Jesse Malin
Band Link: www.gaslightanthem.com

Terminal 5 is the worst venue in NYC but The Gaslight Anthem rocked the house last night! Seriously, Terminal 5 is horrible for the sound and the layout if my opinion counts for anything. T5 makes it hard to hear anything unless you are directly in front of the stage on any level. Yet the unlucky group of fans don’t get to hear as well when we’re blocked by pillars and platforms.

Great Big Sea made a stop in the small town of Tarrytown, NY last night. The night offered fantastic music, lots of hand clapping & dancing and jokes about hot dogs and Rocky Horror Picture Show. The sold out venue was bouncing to the music stopped, and the band were excellent as always.

The Weakerthans – The Bottom Lounge, Chicago, IL

I have only ever met two types of people in this world, diehard Weakerthan fans and people who have never heard of them. I always felt myself as some sort anomaly because I like them, but I’m not in love with them. I always found it difficult to listen to more than four songs in a row because singer John Samson’s voice is too sweet for my taste. It at times borderlines on whiny no matter how good their albums might be (and they’re damn good). With that said, I walked into Friday night’s show with trepidation. I was more than happy to be proved wrong.

The UK rock band The Rifles were finally in town to support their new release “Great Escape” that was just released over in North America on Nettwerk. I’ve been a fan of the band for over a year now but never had the chance to see them perform live. I finally got the chance last night to see them at the Mercury Lounge in New York City and glad I made the trek down.
