ReadJunk Playlist: March 2010 (St Patrick’s Day Edition)

ReadJunk Playlist: March 2010 (St Patrick's Day Edition)
It’s March and we all know what that means! St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. This month’s ReadJunk Playlist is dedicated to Celtic and folk songs that will get you in the green spirit; and well for others the drinking spirit! This playlist is an easy one for me considering this is one of my favorite genres of music and something I listen to all year round. I’m not one of those phony “Kiss Me I’m Irish” people that breaks out their shirt and stupid green and white Mad Hater hat every year. Perhaps this playlist will give you a bit of a variety than just listening to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly. Here we go!

Flogging Molly played in New York City last night on their annual Green 17 tour. RIP: Alistair Hulett (Roaring Jack)

Scottish folk singer Alistair Hulett of Roaring Jack has passed away due to complications of liver failure. I didn’t know he suffered liver failure until seeing on Shite N Onions that he was really ill. This is really sad news because Alistair Hullet was an excellent singer and songwriter who fronted the folk punk band Roaring Jack in Australia. After that band, he did mainly acoustic folk music and was just as successful. His talent will be missed! Time to go blare some Roaring Jack!! More after the jump:

Billy Bragg refuses to pay taxes

Billy Bragg is making headlines again, this time for refusing to pay taxes because of the “fat cat” bonuses that the Royal Bank of Scotland gets with British people’s tax money. He has called on the British public in joining him on the fight against the banks and UK Government. You can join the group No Bonus 4 RBS at Facebook here. Go get ‘em Billy, you got balls but go get ‘em!

Music Video: Frank Turner – “Photosynthesis”

news_1109_frankturner_photo
Just as Frank Turner’s new album “Poetry of the Deed” came out, I discovered his album from 2008 called “Love Ire & Song.” I don’t know which album I like better, his newest or one from last year but I listen to them both at least 5 times a week. “Photosynthesis” is one of those songs that’s probably one of my favorites from him. Here’s the music video from that:

It’s no secret that the Levellers is my favorite band. While I can’t cross the pond to go see them perform all the time, the next best thing is either their live DVDs or CDs. In this case, Live at Royal Albert Hall is a brand new live album, recorded at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. The album is available through the band’s fanclub, or you can purchase a download version at iTunes internationally (yes it’s available on US iTunes as well)!
