ReadJunk Playlist: March 2010 (St Patrick's Day Edition)
It’s March and we all know what that means! St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. This month’s ReadJunk Playlist is dedicated to Celtic and folk songs that will get you in the green spirit; and well for others the drinking spirit! This playlist is an easy one for me considering this is one of my favorite genres of music and something I listen to all year round. I’m not one of those phony “Kiss Me I’m Irish” people that breaks out their shirt and stupid green and white Mad Hater hat every year. Perhaps this playlist will give you a bit of a variety than just listening to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly. Here we go!

Richie Havens, the legendary folk musician, who opened the festival in 1969 fittingly, opened the celebrations on this glorious morning in Bethel in 2009 in front of an audience of some 200 invited guests and media.

Yusuf (Cat Stevens) – “Roadsinger”

Although Yusuf Islam had previously recorded several Muslim albums, including the children one “A is for Allah,” he returned to the pop/folk music that he originally became known across the globe for in 2006 with “An Other Cup.” It was a full 28 year break from the pop/folk music world that he turned his back on, as Cat Stevens while still very much at the top of his game. And now with the 2009 release of his 2nd “mainstream” album as Yusuf we discover that’s 2006’s “An Other Cup” was no fluke. The opening track “Welcome Home” picks up right where “Green Fields,Golden Sands” left off, and doesn’t let up with the prime folkiness (for Folks sake!) This is clearly the Cat Stevens of old, sounding pretty much like he did in 1975.

Adam Hill – “Them Dirty Roads”

Record Label:
S/R
Genre: Folk

Buy on Amazon.com

Traditional folk with a country, nearly bluegrass, twang. I come from the camp that believes there is no such thing as a bad Adam, but this album isn’t for me. The best I can say is that the guitarwork is competent if sparse and often uninteresting. Everything else is subpar or clichéd. Same ol’ desolate, lonely country roads, same upbeat chords when applicable, same maudlin violins adding mawkish emotion when the songs themselves can’t cut it.
