Gogol Bordello announces new album and tour dates

Gogol Bordello have a new album coming out in the spring called “Transcontinental Hustle” and have also announced initial tour dates in the USA as well as Europe. What’s even cooler is DeVotchKa is playing with them on the US dates! I’m not sure if DeVotchKa is playing with them on their US Tibet Benefit Show at Carnegie Hall on February 26th, or any NYC dates but they are for other US dates. I might have to attend one of those shows! Can’t wait to hear the new album as well. Tickets go on sale Friday and Saturday but a pre-sale is happening right now if you sign up for the band’s website. Read on for more info from Eugene Hutz and the band:

Castevet – Subterranean Chicago, IL

Date: January 20th, 2010
Band Link: www.myspace.com/romancastevet
Less than a year after releasing their Summer Fences EP, Castevet headlined their record release show for The Echo & The Light at Subterranean last weekend. Taking the stage after midnight, the group displayed an explosive combination of indie, emo, punk, and instrumental. It’s almost as if the group single handedly picked the best element from their favorite bands and magically placed them into their songs.

Nakatomi Plaza – “Ghosts”

Record Label: S/R
Genre: Indie/Post-Hardcore
Band Link: www.myspace.com/nakatomiplaza
Buy on Amazon.com

Nakatomi Plaza exits stage left on this interesting but angsty final album. Musically, “Ghosts” finds them somewhere between post-hardcore and Superchunk-style distortion-heavy indie. The tunes are dense, with a lot packed into 2-3 minutes, but there isn’t quite the dynamic energy to make it work. Male-female vocals are emotionally powerful but don’t seem to fit well over the flat music.

Mystery Of Two – “S/T”

cds_mysteryoftwo
Record Label: Exit Stencil
Genre: Indie
Band Link: www.myspace.com/mysteryoftwo

Musically better than their debut, Mystery of Two are still marred by stupid vocals. In fact, because the music is cohesive – and downright poppy and pleasant! – the garbled, half-spoken vocals sound even more jarring and irritating on this record. This album is like trying to enjoy a fun, sunny day at the park while a drunken David Byrne and David Thomas throw rocks at your head.

The Get Up Kids – The Metro, Chicago, IL

A lot can be said about bands that decide to reunite to tour. Of all the reasons why, I can think it is safe to attribute the main cause to nostalgia. According to Merriam-Webster, Nostalgia is a noun and has two meanings: 1. the state of being homesick 2. a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition. Touring in support of the tenth anniversary of their album, Something to Write Home About, The Get Up Kids evoked feelings of nostalgia in Chicago last Wednesday night.

news_1009_500daysofsummer
500 Days of Summer was the indie film to see this summer. Of course I didn’t bother to see it in theaters. The film will be coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray on December 22nd. Since I like Zooey Deschanel, I’ll definitely check this one out. Be sure to check out the soundtrack as well, which features a new song from She & Him (Zooey and M. Ward’s band).
