If you haven’t realized yet that New York City is becoming more and more of a Police State, here’s example #545. Starting May 8th, NYC will be forcing stricter rules on street musicians/buskers or just musicians in general who perform out in the street and parks. They will have to perform in 100 defined spots in the parks, and have to PAY to rent the limited area space. Yes seriously! So say I wanted to film a friend in the park, I could be subjected to a $250 summons if I don’t comply with the rules. This is complete bullshit and something needs to be done! You can sign a petition to help stop this from happening!

Canadian folk group Great Big Sea is currently celebrating 20 years and stopped by a sold out Town Hall in New York City on April 19th. The band were their usual selves: highly entertaining, cracking jokes, singing their asses off and just making everyone feel good after a long, dramatic week.

Last week I met up with singer/songwriter Brad Mackeson in Washington Square Park for Before The Concert. Brad’s new album 1945 is pretty damn good, and he played two songs from that as well as a new one. The last song he played in the episode is a cover of the Dylan/Harrison’s “If Not For You.” Check it out!

New York rocker Willie Nile and his band played an early show at Joe’s Pub last night. If you’ve been to a Willie Nile show before, you know why they are legendary! This was only my second time seeing Willie, but I’ve been a fan of his since 2004 when I saw him for the first time. I believe it was in 2004 and he opened for the Saw Doctors at Irving Plaza. I have no idea why I haven’t seen him since but I need to make it a point to see him more than once every 9 years!

The Beards from Australia are a comedy rock band and they have 3 albums worth of songs about Beards. Funny songs too! Something tells me they have plenty of more beard songs to sing about. The band meet up with me in Washington Square Park in New York City Wednesday and performed 3 beardly songs (“Born with a Beard,” “Shaved Off His Beard,” and “If Your Dad Doesn’t Have A Beard, You’ve Got Two Mums”). It was pretty hard to film and not laugh at these guys. This is a video you need to watch!

It’s that time of the year when The Saw Doctors come to the United States and rock out! They stopped at their usual spot at Irving Plaza and the show was sold out! That’s not surprising since they sell out that place in August when they play. But since it’s St Patrick’s Day weekend, everybody was out having a great time, watching the band from Tuam.

Well apparently I went to the wrong Dropkick Murphys show! I woke up to the news that Ken Casey kicked the shit out of someone on stage who was giving a Nazi salute. The band was playing a cover of “TNT” when Ken saw the Nazi douchebag saluting, so he dropped his bass and kicked the crap out of the guy on stage! Bravo to Ken! Watch the video below!
