Back in December, I did an charity auction for Hurricane Sandy relief. I got bands to sign concert prints I shot and then auctioned off the prints for Sandy specific charities. I raised about $550 bucks the first time and I’m in the middle of my second auction now! This time, the auctions feature prints of Frank Turner, NOFX, Pilfers, Bigger Thomas, Saw Doctors and Young Dubliners. The proceeds will go towards Sandy relief (NJ’s Hometown Heroes) and the Boston Marathon victims (Dropkick Murphys’ Claddagh Fund). Auctions end on Thursday May 9th!

Many ska fans rejoiced when it was announced that Pilfers were going on a nationwide tour with Reel Big Fish in early 2013. Aside from a few reunion shows, the band had been pretty dormant since their break-up in 2001. As the tour was announced, news followed that founding members, bassist Anna Milat-Meyer and trombonist/vocalist Vinny Nobile, would not be joining them on this trek. Enter Ben Basile and Billy Kottage. Joining on bass and trombone respectively, these guys came in to fill the very large shoes left by their predecessors.

Opening Bands: Dan Potthast, The Pilfers
It’s been almost six years since Reel Big Fish came to Pittsburgh and the last time that the Pilfers were in the ‘burgh they tore up Club Laga last century. I miss that place, but the Altar Bar has been a good substitute for some pretty great shows in Pittsburgh over the past few years. Along for the ride with those two bands was Dan Potthast, lead singer of MU330, with his solo acoustic act. I was thrilled and excited to be catching an all ska show for the first time in a long time as well.

Asbestos Records announced a cool ska tour they are working on for the Northeast. In October, Pilfers, The Pietasters and Spring Heeled Jack will play in Philly, DC, NYC (No Pietasters apparently. Guess they are pissed Rangers beat the Caps haha), New Haven, Foxborough and Providence. Another cool thing is that Spring Heeled Jack will be playing acoustic sets that’s a bit of a change.

While many of us are celebrating with friends and family this holiday season, many of our animal brethren in shelters and other inhospitable places aren’t so lucky. Waltham, MA’s THE ORGAN BEATS have decided to extend a branch of mistletoe to these dogs and cats in their homestate with a Christmas song for charity this holiday season.

Bad ska puns aside, I’ve been meaning to do a ska playlist for some time now but felt like now was a good time. Pretty much, I couldn’t think of a November playlist theme. Voting songs? eh, maybe. Thanksgiving songs? Do they even exist? This November “Skanksgiving“ playlist is simply a list of my favorite ska bands and songs. Songs I’ve listened to over the years, ones that got me into ska music, etc. Just an excellent mix of Jamaica ska, 2 tone, Third wave, ska punk, ska core and every other sub-genre you can think of. Check it out rude boys and rude girls!
