ReadJunk.com is going to create playlists each month for you! Everyone loves a good mix tape, CD, playlist (whatever) but sometimes you just don’t know what to put on it. Well each month I’ll write up a good playlist to create for yourself or someone else. Each playlist will most likely be a theme, but sometimes I might just wing it and put a bunch of songs I like together. The music will range from ska to punk to folk rock to even more obscure stuff like TV themes. Whatever I feel like putting on the list basically.

Date: January 20th, 2010
Band Link: www.myspace.com/romancastevet
Less than a year after releasing their Summer Fences EP, Castevet headlined their record release show for The Echo & The Light at Subterranean last weekend. Taking the stage after midnight, the group displayed an explosive combination of indie, emo, punk, and instrumental. It’s almost as if the group single handedly picked the best element from their favorite bands and magically placed them into their songs.

What people thought was just another Internet hoax, ended up being the truth. Jay Reatard (a.k.a Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.) has tragically passed away at the age of 29. The Memphis musician died in his sleep last night and was found at his home this morning. While I don’t know Jay Reatard’s music at all, I know he was well known. Either people liked him or they despised him. Like the guy or not, 29 is just too damn early for someone to die. Details are up in the air right now on what the cause of death is, so I’ll post that when the details come in.

Interviews

Canadian ambassadors of suburban punk rock, DOA, are still loud, still yelling, and still passionate at what inspires them. Punk rock is over 30 years old. Among the bands from the first generation of punk rock musicians that continue to play what they do best and perhaps even louder or energetic than ever is DOA. Rock star journalist Ray Manuud discusses punk rock, politics, beer, hockey, and other issues around the globe with DOA front man and founder Joey “Shithead” Keithley.

If Rancid and Social Distortion had a baby, it would likely sound like Autonomadic. 20 punk tracks meld Rancid’s “Let’s Go” peppiness with Social D’s tatted-up swagger.

Record Label: S/R

Four very boring, sloppy songs. The individual members seem talented (witness the showy bass lines on “Another Starless Night”), but together they’re a jumbled mess. Sounding like a high school band, I was surprised to learn that She Likes Todd is 10 years old (the band, not the members).
