RIP: Major Dick Winters

RIP: Major Richard “Dick” Winters (Band of Brothers)

More sad news to report this weekend. World War II veteran, Easy Company leader, and hero Major Richard “Dick” Winters of 101st Airborne Division, 506th Regiment (Easy Company) has passed away. Winters was 92 years old, and was going to turn 93 on January 21st. Major Winters and the rest of Easy Company skyrocketed into fame in recent years, thanks to the HBO masterpiece Band of Brothers, brought to you by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Damian Lewis portrayed Winters on the mini-series and Winters himself was interviewed and featured on the series and documentary about the regiment & war. He lead a quiet life in PA after that, and never considered himself a hero. As much as he didn’t think so, the rest of the United States and the world think he is. I highly recommend reading his book Beyond Band of Brothers, which is an in-depth look at his life before, during and after World War II. Major Dick Winters will be missed but what he did for this country will be remembered forever!

RIP: Leslie Nielsen

Veteran Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen has passed away at the age of 84. Everyone knows him from comedy hits like Airplane and Naked Gun movies, including the unfunny comedies that followed after Naked Gun 33 1/3, like Dracula: Dead and Loving It, 2001: A Space Travesty, Spy Hard, Wrongfully Accused, and even Scary Movie 3 & 4. Although, I liked Scary Movie 3 &4 and Dracula had it’s moments. Before his comedy roles, he was a more dramatic actor appearing in TV and movies like Forbidden Planet, Poseidon Adventure, Ransom!, The Swamp Fox, and endless other movies & Tv series. Time to salute Frank Drebin and Dr. Alan Rumack and watch some Naked Gun and Airplane! Watch some funny clips below:

Gregory Isaacs RIP

RIP: Gregory Isaacs

The reggae world has lost yet another legend. Jamaican singer Gregory Isaacs lost his battle with cancer and has passed away at the age of 59. To this day, his album Hold Tight on Heartbeat Records is still one of my favorite reggae albums. Isaacs had a distinct reggae style and vocals, and he will be missed tremendously!

RIP: Ari Up (The Slits)

Arianna Forster, a.k.a. Ari Up, of the punk band The Slits has passed away at the age of 48. John Lydon (Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols, PiL), Ari’s StepFather made the announcement on his website. Ari passed away from a serious illness, but I’m not sure what that is. The punk & music community have lost another important figure. Just last year, the band released a new album Trapped Animal after not releasing new material for over 25 years.

RIP Stephen J. Cannell

RIP: Stephen J. Cannell (A-Team, 21 Jump Street)

Emmy winning producer, writer, sometime actor Stephen J. Cannell has passed away at the age of 69 due to complications with melanoma. Cannell co-created/created/produced a lot of TV series over the years including: The Rockford Files, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Wiseguy, 21 Jump Street, Silk Stalkings, The Commish, and Hunter. Probably the latest thing he appeared on or did was guest star on Castle as himself. He entertained people for many years with the shows he created and his iconic production logo of him typing on the typewriter will ever be imprinted on my mind.

RIP: Greg Giraldo

A little late in posting this but comedian Greg Giraldo has passed away from an accidental overdose. Giraldo was 44, and known for his Celebrity Roasts of has-been celebrities like David Hasselhoff and Jerry Springer. I first knew about Greg when he was a frequent guest on Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. We even did an interview with him back in 2005 as well, which you can read here. I also reviewed his latest stand-up Midlife Vices last October. He started out as a lawyer before changing careers, and was a guest on Lewis Black’s show, as well as a judge on Last Comic Standing. His funny roasts and stand-ups will be sorely missed!

RIP: Dennis Hopper

Actor Dennis Hopper has passed away at the age of 74. He has been in the hospital for awhile now, and has died from complications of prostate cancer. His life was complicated & chaotic even at the end; divorcing his wife back in January from his “deathbed.” Dennis Hopper will always be known for such movies as Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, True Romance, Blue Velvet, Hoosiers, Speed, and yes, even Super Mario Bros. Ok that last one was a joke. He also did some TV work as well, playing the main baddie in the first season of 24. Dennis Hopper and the interesting characters he portrayed will be missed.

RIP: Gary Coleman

“What’choo talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” TV Actor Gary Coleman has passed away at the age of 42. This morning it was being reported that Gary Coleman was put on life support and suffered an inter-cranial hemorrhage. I knew it wasn’t going to be good news after hearing that. Sadly, he passed away around noon today. I loved Diff’rent Strokes growing up and watch it until the end. I even like watching it in syndication as well. Diff’rent Strokes is what Gary Coleman will be remembered for, but he was also in a few movies (Jimmy The Kid, On the Right Track, Dirty Work) and made TV appearances in Buck Rogers, Married With Children, Unhappily Ever After and recently in Penn & Teller: Bullshit. He even had an animated show called…”The Gary Coleman Show.” Sad news to start off the holiday weekend. Watch some videos after the jump:

RIP: Ronnie James Dio

Heavy metal rock icon Ronnie James Dio died Sunday morning. He performed with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio. Ronnie James Dio has been battling stomach cancer for awhile but this is still sad news. I haven’t listened too much from Dio but whenever a heavy metal legend has passed away, it’s something I need to post and acknowledge. Maybe this will make me go out and listen to some Dio and other music Dio was apart of. Crank up “Holy Diver” tonight for Ronnie Dio!
