Kate Miller-Heidke

Kate Miller-Heidke
Sony Music Australia artist Kate Miller-Heidke is currently on tour in the US with Ben Folds, and her album Curiouser has gone Platinum in Australia. If you miss her with Ben Folds, she’ll be back touring the States soon, including prominent appearances at SXSW and Coachella. We sat down with her to ask the important questions on everyone’s minds.

What would you do today if you knew tomorrow meant the end of humanity?
I would attempt to summon some kind of a demon using one of Aleister Crowley’s Magick books and ask this demon for the transformative power to turn myself into a sloth. That is if the sloths were going to be spared in the extinction of humanity.

Just so you know, I’ve been tossing any and all singer/songwriter CDs without even giving them a cursory listen. (Don’t worry indignant ethicists and publicists, I note on the Contact page that I don’t want this stuff.) The problem is that, objectively speaking, so much of it is so bad. Women s/s’s are either breathlessly singing their high school poetry or want to be the next Shania Twain. Stereotypes? Maybe, but I’ve dismissed literally thousands of “artists” that fit these pigeonholes.

New one from the dude from Hot Water Music and The Draft, and it’s something of a departure. The album ranges from alternative rock to lo-fi indie to twangy folk, but the songwriting is solid and the production is excellent.

Woody Guthrie. Bob Dylan. Billy Bragg. British folk punker Frank Turner should be considered among that group of Folk troubadours in no time. Turner is quickly becoming a household name thanks to being signed to Epitaph Records in the States. The former hardcore punk vocalist of Million Dead is now a solo singer/songwriter and has released 3 studio full-length albums now. “Poetry of the Deed” is his latest brilliant album that everyone should give a listen.

Winfred E. Eye – “Til I Prune”

Antenna Farm
Genre: Singer/Songwriter, Lo-Fi Indie

Minimalist, bleak, and horribly boring singer/songwriter stuff with one decent attempt at twangy heartland rock (“Lil Peck”). What kills the album are the many slow-as-death tracks that wallow in sadsackery but offer absolutely no incentive for you to stick with it.
