Adam Coozer's Blog - My 2007 Was Better Than Yours

My 2007 kicked your 2007's ass all the way back to 2003.

I saw live:
David Cross
Jon Benjamin
Todd Barry
Louis C.K. (twice)
Janeane Garofalo
Denis Leary (meh)
Ricky Gervais
Gogol Bordello
Lily Allen
RUSH!
Flight of the Conchords
An improv thing with Daily Show peeps
Fuerzabruta
Evil Dead: The Musical
and probably the most ass-kickinest: KAIJU BIG BATTEL!

I went to:
San Francisco
Baltimore, DC, & Annapolis
Los Angeles
Trinidad & Tobago
Argentina

Learned:
How to boil an egg
...that's it, really.

Saw in the flesh:
Meerkats
Tai Shan the panda cub
Manikins
Canadians

Karaoked:
6 or 7 times
Poorly

Had sex:
6 or 7 times
Poorly

Won Scrabulous:
58 times
Mightily

As you can readily see, your 2007 just got its ass handed to him. But hey, there's always next year... sucker!

Adam Coozer's Blog - Monks massacred, while US cops behave badly

So today has been quite the bummer.

A former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta is claiming that THOUSANDS of monks are being rounded up and massacred. You have to be pretty fucking low to kill monks. But now the world can wake up to this horror and do something. You know, like have the UN debate for a year about whether there should be a vote to issue a strongly worded reprimand.

You don't have to go to the exotic Far East to find authoritarian douchebaggery. Videotapes have caught Chicago cops brutally beating anyone and everyone. There is also proof of Chicago cops torturing African Americans into confessing crimes that put them on death row. And now, one special operations officer has been caught on tape planning a hit on another officer to keep him from becoming a witness against him.

My own backyard has its authority problems. This is an interesting (if long-winded) dispatch on New York City's surveillance explosion. It's got a sky-is-falling feel to it, and I don't think we're living Orwell's nightmare quite yet, but there are some startling data in there.

Worst of all, I have a piece of popcorn kernel wedged up in my gums. I hate that.

Bryan's Blog - I Need Phpbb Forum Help!

If you're a PHP programmer or simply know how to use phpbb forum, please read on. If you're not, well then you'll probably be bored with this blog entry...

I really need some help with ReadJunk.com's forum. I'm currently trying to upgrade the forum and I'm having a bunch of problems. First problem is the current speed of the index.php file, it loads extremely slow. So not sure if it's the MODs that I installed, my shitty host, or I need to upgrade the forum. I decided it's time to upgrade to phpbb3 since I'm running phpbb2. I started encountering problems when I was trying to convert the forums directly on the server. After trying to pursue my host to lift the sql limit on the server so it wouldn't timeout, I tried to install a local server.

After figuring that out, I tried to export the forum database using PhpMyAdmin and going through the Forum's admin as well. I can save the Sql file from the Forum, but it doesn't work when I try to restore since the file is around 350mb unzipped. I'm trying to use "BigDump" to restore but the files need to be under 8-16mb big and it stops working halfway through because there are extended inserts or doesn't have double quotes?

Every time I try to export the database through PhpMyAdmin, it times out. I tried to download each table at a time, it works up until php_post_text table. That file alone is 250mb and having a hard time trying to figure out a way to save JUST that one. Do any of you out there, if you're even reading this, knows what to do? Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope...

Bryan's Blog - SkaPunkPhotos.com re-launched!

This weekend I re-launched my photography website SkaPunkPhotos.com. For only having the website up for less than a year, I wasn't entirely happy with the way it looked and I felt it deserved a change. But then again I'm a fickle sod. The site is less black and has a more lime green color scheme going. It might make some people sick but I think it looks great. I coded the whole thing and just used old PHP elements from the old site. I only needed some help from my programmer friend Doug.

The site's biggest change is the blog on the homepage. I felt like I should just blog right on my photo site; it would give people a reason to come back. I'm going to discuss the shows that I shoot, and have a more photography-based write ups instead of the band's performances like I do here. I might also blog about some random photography stuff or post non-music photos as well. On the right hand of the sidebar, I have the Updates section, as well as new sections for Upcoming Show, Links and RSS feeds. Another change I added was Band Photos. I don't have any photos of that yet but I'm looking for bands to shoot, so if you're interested please contact me at bryan@skapunkphotos.com or bryan@readjunk.com.

Bryan's Blog - Note to Self: Don't Drive into NYC with only a Quarter Tank of Gas

Last Saturday, I thought I was being smart with saving money on gas, when in fact I was an idiot. I was an idiot because I almost got stranded in Manhattan late Saturday night after the Rogue Wave show. I headed into NYC in the earlier evening, and decided I’d just get gas right before the exit for The George Washington Bridge. It’s still technically NJ so the gas is about 40 cents cheaper than where I live. Figures the one time I actually stop at this gas station, the damn station is closed down because they ran out of gas. I got pissed and just speed off and went into the city anyway. I figured I’ll just get it on the way back. I wasn’t really paying too close attention to where my gas was at. When I parked my car in the parking garage, it was pretty close to E but it didn’t have the gas light come on yet. So I figured I was safe.

After the show, I get my car back from the garage and now my gas light is on. I start to freak out! I mean really freak out, panic-attack-kind-of freaking out. I didn’t know how much time I had to get gas, and was wondering if these people just left the car running or something. I started to make my way over to the Westside Highway but kept getting stuck at damn red lights. Every block, there was a red light, red light, red light, etc... At this point I was punching my steering wheel and having a mental breakdown. I just didn’t feel like having to deal with getting stuck in the city. I do have triple A and I’m sure I could have got a cab to just get gas but who really wants to do that? I don’t, I want to go home and go to sleep! So I decided to just chance it and just keep going up the Westside Highway so I kept a close watch on my gas tank. It kept teetering around E and one notch above it; but the light was still on. but in the back of my mind, I kept visioning me pushing my car on the GW Bridge, holding up traffic.

My girlfriend decided to call 411 and try to find the closest gas station in NYC. You would think there would be a gas station on the Westside Highway or something. But no, NYC is filled with a bunch of ass clowns. What is there, like 3 gas stations in all of NYC? The guy on the 411 line tells Kristen that the nearest station northbound is off 78th street, like right off 78th street. I said okay let’s try that then, and get off the 79th street exit. I go down 79th street, trying to find the “Mobil” gas station like the 411 operator told us was there. Went down 78th street, and what we find is not a “Mobil” GAS station, but a fucking “T-Mobile” PHONE store. Are you fucking kidding me?!?! This retard tells us to waste 10 minutes AND gas and go to a T-Mobile store? I’m seriously filing a complaint and want this person fired for being a fucking dumbass. I was really beyond pissed at this point but decided to just press our luck (NO WHAMMY!) and head for that gas station on the Palisades Parkway.

After stressing for about 45 minutes, I finally made it to the gas station and thanked the higher powers for letting me get gas. I was relieved that I didn’t get stuck in NYC and decided I’m not going anywhere far unless I have at least a half a tank of gas in my car. Maybe I’ll ask the higher powers to have a big giant safe fall on this 411 operator’s head?

Bryan's Blog - Alternative Press Posted My AP Tour Photos

I shot the AP tour for Alternative Press this Friday at Irving Plaza in NYC. They posted the photos I sent to them today. They asked for 10 photos, I sent 12. Everyone else seemed to send them 20-30 so I don't know what's the deal with that. You can view those here. If you go to page 4 on the flash image thing, you can see my photos there.

Who knows if they will use any of these for the magazine but here's hoping! It will be nice to finally get published somewhere and get SOME money for the photos. You can see all the photos up at my photo site here.

Bryan's Blog - Photos: AP Tour '08 Featuring All Time Low, The Rocket Summer, and more!

I had no plans to see this tour, in fact I really can't stand this type of music. It's music for 13 year olds pretty much. But I got an opportunity to shoot for Alternative Press Magazine and their website so I decided to take that opportunity. This was their tour and the photos will be posted on their tour blog later today (I'll have the link for it soon). I got stuck in the usual GW Bridge BS, this time it's 8 dollars to sit in traffic for an hour! Hooray for NY!

When I got to Irving Plaza, the line was around the building with screaming teenage girls and teen boys that had girl hairstyles & jeans. There was an incident at the door where the list wasn't there, so another photographer and I had to wait for the manager to clear it up. The other photographer was really nice and we were talking pretty much the entire night. It was cool to talk to someone since no one went with me. Check out his photos from the show here. The other photographers in the pit were pretty much little girls, a whole lot of them! I guess people have to start somewhere right? It was almost impossible to walk around the photo pit, but I somehow managed. I was mostly sitting to the side of the stage because my lenses were too close. I was using the 50mm lens for a little bit but was resorting back to my old kit lens because it was a wide angle lens. I really need to get a new wide angle lens dedicated to low lighting.

The first band was Forever The Sickest Kids, and they had a lot of energy. I pretty much tuned out all the music for this show and just concentrated on getting some good shots. These types of bands are definitely not something I'd want to listen to though. Sonny was after them and I didn't think they were good at all. The kid singer didn't even sound like he reached puberty yet; his voice was so whiny and as Randy Jackson would say, “pitchy.” After Sonny were The Matches. They were some-what tolerable, compared to the other bands. The Rocket Summer featured one guy that played like 50 instruments and had a girlie singing voice. I probably got the best photos of him. Headlining the show was All Time Low and they were okay. I keep trying to capture the guitarist's jumps and kicks the entire set. Overall, I got some cool photos but I wish I had a better wide angle lens and camera. I guess I got to keep saving up for it. Below are some of the best photos of the night:

See all the photos from the AP Tour show here:
All Time Low
The Rocket Summer
The Matches
Sonny
Forever The Sickest Kids

Bryan's Blog - Photos: Hiking Up The Sleeping Giant in CT

This weekend I was in CT visiting my girlfriend and we decided to take a hike up the “Sleeping Giant” in Mount Carmel/Hamden, Ct. The Mountain is right by her school so might as well try it out once. I don’t hike too often just because I complain too much and I’m a lazy shit. I don’t know what it is with hikes, but every time I seem to pull my groin muscle. Thankfully this hike wasn’t as bad as the one I did up in Catskills with my older brother last year. There’s nothing like hiking up from start to finish with a pulled groin. FUN! I guess I just need to stretch first?

But it was somewhat relaxing trip up the mountain with my girlfriend. The day almost hit 60 degrees and it was comfortable out. Since its still April, there weren’t any leaves on the trees yet but it made most of my photos boring. But I still got a few interesting pictures. Take a look below:

(EEEWWW!!)

See the rest of the photos here.

Do you know what annoys the living crap out of me lately? People (photographers in general) who have to be hip with retarded Internet lingo and use words like "Photogs" or "Tog" to describe a photographer. When did this stupid word come to be and when is it going away? I just cringe when I read or hear this word. "Oh, I get to meet all my fellow photogs in the photo pit." "Hey I wonder what that ‘Tog is shooting with?" Do you people realize how dumb you sound? What’s wrong with typing out an extra few letters and spelling out "PHOTOGRAPHER?!" Maybe that 'Tog is going to be "BRB" or gonna "TTYL" or going to "GTGHBABAD" (going to get hit by a bus and die)? Please stop using these words now because no one is going to take you seriously when you say it.

Bryan's Blog - Blender.com Posted One Of My Photos

I submitted some Flogging Molly photos to Blender.com (Blender Magazine) last month and they ended posting one and a nice write-up about me & my site. It's in the "Photo of the Day" section in the Blog.

Hey it's a start, maybe I can get a little more exposure now and maybe even shoot some shows for them exclusively? Who knows, it's just nice to get your photos posted on a major website. Now I just need to get my stuff into a publication and hopefully start getting paid for this stuff...

If you want to check out the photo & write-up, visit here.

Bryan's Blog - Photos: Venice, Florida Vacation 2008

This week I took a vacation with my girlfriend Kristen, down to Florida to see my parents and her grandparents. It was great to get away, and just relax. So you might have noticed a lack of activity on the website this week. Yes I'm the glue that keeps this toy ship together. Anyway, the first 2 days weren't as warm or sunny as I would have liked but we still managed to get to the beach and do things. Anything is better than work and being in cold NY weather. Later in the week the weather got better and I actually got to go swimming. I wish I could be in 70 degree weather all year round.

I took lots of photos of sunsets down in Venice, and went out to eat a few times. The gray hairs were out in full force! I went kayaking a little bit and wish I had my camera with me. A pelican was flying right near me and dove right into the water to get a fish. Of course my girlfriend had to clap and mock me the entire time after that. But I'm sure if I had my camera with me, it would have gotten wet or the bird wouldn't have flew right in front of me. It's just the way it is. But, it was a nice time seeing my parents, their puppy Coco, Kristen's grandparents and just getting away from everything. To end the trip, we asked my parents to give us an Easter egg hunt around the house. Yes, I'm almost 30 and I still love Easter egg hunts. And yes, I beat my girlfriend with 18 eggs ha ha!

Here's some photos from the trip:

see the rest of the photos here

Bryan's Blog - Las Vegas Canceled? NOOO!!

I should have written this a few weeks before but apparently NBC is not renewing one of my favorite TV shows... Las Vegas! I knew NBC would cancel the show after James Caan and Nikki Cox left the show at the end of last year's season. Nothing like two of your biggest stars leaving a show and the rest of the cast picking up the scraps. It never works, just like shows NewsRadio, Coupling and I'm sure many others.

I really liked Las Vegas, even when the departure of Caan & Cox. I just love to watch all the hot women on the show, but that's not the only reason why I like the series. It was a guilty pleasure show because the storylines were so far fetched but they were really entertaining. How many times are people going to rob the casino and something bad was going to happen there? It's like Baywatch, it's gotta be the worse beach in the world to have all that stuff happen there. Las Vegas had a great ensemble cast and the show was actually quite funny too. I'll admit, I was a little hesitant with Tom Selleck taking over the Montecito but he really filled some big shoes left behind with Caan leaving the show. Another thing that tipped me off with the cancellation was the Friday night at 9 or 10pm night time slot. That's the death of a TV show spot. Everyone is out (well except me) Friday nights so no one watches TV.

I just think it's unfortunate to end the series on such a cliffhanger. It's a stupid cliffhanger but at least give the TV show a proper send off. It's only been on the air for 5 seasons, at least out of respect give them a 2-hour series finale! CBS gave Jericho a second chance when their hardcore fans sent them millions of peanuts, maybe fans of Las Vegas need to send NBC a shitload of poker chips? I doubt NBC will give the show a series finale but maybe there will be one that's made directly for DVD? Here's hoping!

Bryan's Blog - Sick of the Damn Snow!

The one thing that I hate with living in the Northeast is all the snowstorms we get. It’s usually right around or on the day of a show or something. So for the whole week I have something planned, I have to watch the stupid weather report. They are usually 30% correct most of the time and change their forecast hourly because THEY HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE! One minute we could be only getting rain, then it turns out we’re getting a foot of snow, then we could be getting only 2 inches of snow. You’d think by now we’d have a better grasp on the weather and what it’s gonna do. I wish it would be just cold in the winter and not snowy. I don’t remember the last time I played ice hockey on a pond. Those days are long gone thanks to global warming. Granted we don’t get THAT many snowstorms anymore, but why is it every time I have a concert to go to, it decides to sleet or snow? Is Snow Miser telling me something that I should move to a warmer city or just be cooped up inside my whole life?

Thankfully the snowstorm is supposed to come tomorrow and not tonight. I’m seeing Flogging Molly at the Chance tonight so that should be a good show. I’m suppose to have a photo pass but The Chance has no photo pit (which is LAME) so not sure how good my photos will come out. The problem with the storm is that I hope my girlfriend can get back to CT for her class Saturday. And Hopefully I can go over this weekend to visit her. I guess if I’m snowed in there’s nothing I can do about that, except maybe move? I can’t wait to complain about how HOT it is in the summer time…

Bryan's Blog - Jericho Season 2 Premiere Airs This Tuesday on CBS!

If there is another show to watch & support besides Lost, it’s Jericho. It’s a fantastic drama that mixes action, mystery, drama, humor, romance and all that fun stuff mixed into one show. It has a great ensemble cast, the best I’ve seen since Lost and Firefly. The show centers around the town of Jericho, Kansas as people try to live in a post-nuclear holocaust. It’s an intriguing concept but something I hope never happens.

The season premiere of the 2nd season airs tomorrow, Tuesday February 12th 2008 at 10pm on CBS. If enough people watch it, perhaps CBS will order more episodes once the writer’s go back to work this week. Or at least pick it up for a third season because 7 episodes aren’t going to be enough. I’m glad the show is coming back from the dead though (just like Family Guy and in a sense Firefly). So do yourself a favor, watch Jericho this Tuesday and support the show. I didn’t become a fan of the show until it was released on DVD so pick up the DVD and get caught up if you have to! Or read up on the previous episodes at the following links:

www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho/
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_(TV_series)
imdb.com/title/tt0805663/

Bryan's Blog - Half-Time Snooze Show

I’m sure most people watched the Super Bowl last night. I’m not even a football fan and I wanted to see if the Pats could go on to have a perfect season. But no, the Giants upset the Patriots and everyone in Boston is crying today. I was actually rooting for Boston though, because I wanted to see them go 19-0. But besides watching the endless amount of unfunny commercials and a low scoring football game, there was also the half-time show with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Could they have gotten a more boring half-time show performance?! Talk about playing it safe. I’ve never really been a fan of Tom Petty’s music before but he did play his classics, but just a little slower. But come on, I’m sure they could have gotten a better band to perform the half-time show…and one that wasn’t going to put most of the audience to sleep. What about bands that still actually can walk across the stage without breaking their hips and that can actually FUCKING MOVE!

I thought the Police would have been a great band to have played the half-time show. I know it would have been a long shot but maybe they should have gotten the Mighty Mighty Bosstones to play, since you know, they are from Boston after all. But many people probably don’t even know who they are. Another thing missing was special guests from the half-time show. Usually guest singers and musicians would come out and surprise the audience, but they didn’t even have that. It was just a boring, old fart Tom Petty playing his music. The performance may have been boring but at least Tom Petty didn’t lip sync like some other people. *cough* Paula Abdul *cough*

Bryan's Blog - Photos from last night's Pilfers show

The Pilfers played another reunion show last night at Knitting Factory in New York City. I'll have a full review up this week but I wanted to share some of the photos I took last night. I managed to get a decent spot right up front, on the left hand side of the stage. I couldn't really get a lot of photos of some of the members of Bigger Thomas but I managed to get some great shots of the Pilfers. Like always, the band played an excellent set and I wish they came back full time again. But I'll take what I can get and see them when I can. Here's some photos of the Pilfers:

See all the photos from the show here:
Pilfers @ Knitting Factory, NYC
Bigger Thomas @ Knitting Factory, NYC
Ghost Front @ Knitting Factory, NYC

Bryan's Blog - Brian Leetch: The Greatest Ranger?

Hey it's not all about concert photography with me. My other passion in life is to bitch about the New York Rangers. But seriously, I love hockey and try to watch every game. I've loved the New York Rangers since I was 5 years old...or so. Tonight was Brian Leetch's ceremony to retire his #2 from the rafters. It was a great night with many of the old players coming back to pay tribute to the defenseman. Brian Leetch, to me, is one of the greatest defensemen to play the game and one of the greatest Ranger players...if not THE greatest. He was with the team for 16 or 17 seasons and was just awesome in all those seasons. I'm still pissed (along with all the rest of the Ranger fans) when ass clown GM Glen Sather traded him away. Brian Leetch even said he's still upset that it went down that way. Good thing Sather didn't bother showing his mug at the ceremony tonight. He might have gotten tomatoed to death!

Leetch's jersey was the first hockey jersey I owned when I was a little lad. It was the old school jersey with the big holes in it. When I met a bunch of old-time hockey players and they signed autographs on it, there were leftover marker spots all over my dress shirt. But back to Leetch, there are still goals & plays he made that I remember growing up, especially in the Rangers' Stanley Cup run. The biggest play most of us remember is when he did his spin move on the Devils cry-baby goalie, Martin Brodeur. Such a nice spin-o-rama and such a meaningful goal too. The first goal in Game 7 was something else too; that clip still gives me goosebumps. He was one of the best quarterbacks of the power play and could go end to end and score a beautiful goal. There's just so many great things to say about the guy.

During the jersey retirement ceremony, Leetch made a surprise announcement and said that Adam Graves' #9 jersey will be retired into the MSG rafters as well next year. Everyone was shocked and so was Adam Graves. He was very humble and pointed back to Brian Leetch, which was a classy move. It was Brian Leetch's night after all. But Graves deserves it and he's definitely still my favorite Ranger player. So I was happy to hear that his number was being retired as well. Brian Leetch and Adam Graves will always be my favorite Rangers. It was Leetch's night tonight and it will be Graves' night next year. Let's Go Rangers! Please don't suck anymore....

Bryan's Blog - A visit to the Scranton Iron Furnaces

This weekend my brother and I visited our college buddy Frank over in Scranton. Every once and awhile we’ll go over and there and just hang out. It’s always a good time. Since Matt is starting to get into photography, we wanted to walk around and shoot at some place. After stuffing our faces with Mexican food, we ended up at the Scranton Iron Furnaces. I’ve been here once before when I first started out in photography, back in 1997-98. It’s a cool place to visit, even though there’s not much to see. The three of us went down to the Furnaces and took some funny shots, and I got some cool infrared as well. Check out some of the photos below:

Eerie infrared shot of Scranton

Frank's going to hell...

Bottom of the iron furnace

Matt killing Frank with a brick..

and again...

the final blow...

So the company DOES exist!

Infrared shot at the top of the furnaces

I almost pissed myself taking this photo

Lackawanna Railroad

a spoof on Hardcore/metal band photos haha

See all the photos here

Bryan's Blog - Long Way Round & Long Way Down

Recently, I wanted to re-watch The Long Way Round mini-series with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. It’s a fantastic series that takes the two actors & best friends across the world, just on their BMV motorbikes. They go from London all the way to New York. They travel through France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Canada and the USA. It’s a once in a lifetime journey and something I always wanted to do myself, I just don’t think I’d ever be able to do it. I’d love to just travel and take pictures along the way. I just wanted to do this going across America, and sleep in my car mostly. By watching the Long Way Round, it certainly makes you want to travel even more (despite all the troubles they encounter). Besides seeing two guys go across the globe on crappy dirt roads, the TV series does have a lot of funny moments. It’s kind of funny to see Ewan McGregor just make fun of Star Wars left & right. Clearly he seems to have gone the way of Sir Alec Guinness and completely regretted them (or so it appears). Charley isn’t as big an actor as Ewan and he even jokes about it on the show. He’s been a few movies though and his Dad is director John Boorman who directed Excalibur!

What I like about the TV series is seeing two guys traveling around the world, just on their bikes, seeing the world, interacting with people, doing charity work and just bonding with each other. Even though you’re not there, you can sense how tough & hard things are there. It’s somewhat gratifying to see them overcome it in the end though. I remember reading in the papers about Ewan McGregor being in town, visiting the Orange County Chopper guys. Some of my friends saw them riding down to New York City. That would have been cool to see. There’s a few TV series that make me sad that it’s all over and this one was one of them. I was hoping they would do this again and thankfully they just released a new series called Long Way Down.

Long Way Down was filmed over the summer and saw the whole crew back again, going from the top of Scotland all the way down to Cape Town in Africa. The DVD was only released in the UK so far so I had to find alternative ways of seeing it. I still hope BBC America or someone in the US airs it, I’ll definitely buy it when it’s released. This series was just as good as the Long Way Round, except it was a lot shorter and felt a little rushed. Even Charley and Ewan were getting discouraged that they felt rushed and couldn’t see everything. The countries they drove in this time were: Scotland, England, France, Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and other African countries all the way down to South Africa. The countries are quite beautiful and I’d love to go there, but with all the violence, terrorism and genocide; it doesn’t necessarily scream “Vacation Spot” to me at the moment. Sure, everything went well for them down in Africa but they had “fixers,” local people and security helping them out. That’s one thing I noticed in the documentary, is that the people they encountered were really friendly and generous. Only if everyone in the world was that friendly & nice. If you like road trips and travel documentaries like me, do yourself a favor and watch The Long Way Round on DVD (special edition has 10 episodes). And watch the Long Way Down when it comes out on TV or DVD here (or thru other methods like I did).
