Conan O’Brien officially leaving NBC

The funniest late night talk show host, Conan O’Brien, is officially leaving NBC after 2 weeks of settlement talks. Everyone should know all the news by now so no point in recapping it for you. The talks were signed this morning, and Conan’s last show will be Friday night when he has Will Ferrell and Tom Hanks on his show. The two actors were the first guest on Conan’s short-lived Tonight Show which only started back in June. The unfunny Jay Leno will return to the Tonight Show March 1st.

I’m wondering what will happen to Conan and his staff now they are free from the idiots at NBC. Everyone says Fox would be a great fit, which I think it would be but there’s lots of things to take into account first. Fox airs re-runs a lot at night and the local news which would have to be re-worked with the affiliates. So if they can get that stuff settled, then sure, go to Fox and take on Letterman and Leno head on. He’ll probably not succeed at first since most of America (Middle America) likes older talk show hosts for some reason. I have to admit, Letterman has been funny with his side of things with all this NBC bullshit. Leno on the other hand, his jokes are stale and not funny at all. The guy should have just said no, I’m leaving NBC and retiring like he planned on doing in the first place. Now he admits NBC forced him to leave. Then leave the network and not harm other talk shows Brett Favre, err I mean Jay. Jimmy Kimmel put it nicely when he attack Leno on his show: “Listen, Jay, Conan (O’Brien) and I have children. All you have to take care of is cars. We have lives to lead here. You have $800 million. For God’s sake, leave our shows alone!”

I think Conan would be a great fit on cable but not sure he would go that route just yet. It’s less money and he’s been great for 17 years on broadcast television so hopefully he can get a new show on one of the other networks. If that doesn’t pan out, perhaps something on Comedy Central if there’s room, or at FX, E! or even Adult Swim/Cartoon Network. It would be sweet for him to go to HBO but I doubt that would happen. I guess we’ll find out what happens over the next few months but I have a feeling he’ll end up at Fox. Wherever Conan goes, I’ll be watching!

NEW YORK (AP / WCBS 880) — NBC said Thursday it has reached a $45 million deal with Conan O’Brien for his exit from the “Tonight” show, allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years.

Under the deal, which came seven months after O’Brien took the reins from Leno, O’Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his staff in severance, the network said in an announcement on the “Today” show.

His final show will be Friday, and Leno will return to “Tonight” on March 1.

“In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were getting out of his own pocket,” his manager, Gavin Polone, told The Wall Street Journal. “Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible.”
