The latest release on Indianola Records from their second best seller Across Five Aprils continues the awe-inspiring log-jam of emo-core normality. The five boys from Chattanooga Tennessee have been cranking out tunes since 2001 and winning over teenage boys and girls the world over. Hooray for boobies!
Is it emo? Yes! Is it good? Sure. Is it different? Well contrary to what the band themselves may tell you, it is certainly not. Across Five Aprils have deemed themselves pioneers in the arena of emo inspired prevalence. They describe their sound as unique and have thus patented’ their sound as Scenic City Hardcore. What exactly does that mean? Well, it means that I could quite literally throw together a compilation of Comeback Kid’, Funeral For a Friend’, From First to Last’ and these guys and you would be extremely hard-pressed to determine who is who. In short Scenic City Hardcore’ means ground-up, unoriginal, undistinguishable emo-______ fill in the adjective of your choice.
The music is tight, the sound is clean and produced well. Vocalist, Brandon Mullins does what he does with proficiency and the band wholly supports him. Lyrically these guys are right up there with the rest of the cheese-laden pop bunnies. Check this out for size; “Tell me baby, are you coming over or do I need to go back to sleep.’ Well, holy fuck. That’s poignant. I’m not saying that lyrics need to delve into politics or the new world order to be meaningful but what I am saying is that, I’ve heard this shit countless times before and I crave something with substance and integrity. How can grown men, spew forth this verbatim atop chunky distorted guitars and pounding drums and then expect to be taken seriously?
Bottom Line: Another faceless entry into the teeming waters that comprise emo-punk
