If you’ve been keeping track of my band of the day, you’ll notice that Alphaspin were one of my picks a few weeks ago. They sent me a copy to get a better listen, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. The London quartet play about as straight-forward pop/rock as it gets, and do it quite well. They keep to a relatively simple and successful formula: well written songs with catchy hooks, crisp production, and strong vocals. Based on their sound, there’s no reason why these guys can’t hit it big.

What I like most about Alphaspin is that in an era where most independent bands are self-recording and then releasing CD-Rs, this band took the effort to create some aesthetically pleasing artwork, proper liner notes, and made it all look professional. They’re also taking a tried and true approach to their music; I’m sure they know that their sound isn’t the most original, but rather than experiment, they choose to write some tight hooks and craft perfectly radio-ready and listenable pop songs. I especially love Sunday Drivers and Yesterday’s News – each has one of those hooks that stay in my head for awhile.

I think my only complaint about the album is that it’s still a band coming into their own; the album as a whole doesn’t have that feel of being complete, and rather more a series of single tracks written at different times and points in the band’s career. Still, the strong tracks really shine through and make you want to hear more. I’m quite confident that a couple years on the road and time will eventually lead to a wonderful second album.

And just a side note. I noticed that the drummer on some of the tracks was Luke Bullen, who drummed for Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, and any band that is one degree from Strummer is that much more awesome in my book.

Bottom Line: Reliable and well-written pop-rock that’ll stay in your head. These guys can make it big.
