I’ve always liked that weirdly aesthetic mix of lush, smart pop and moody, synthy goth. Anagram successfully creates such a sound, though not without effort. Although a duo, the music is multilayered, multitracked, and overdone, almost to a cinematic extent. But it does sound great. With soft female vocals, brooding atmosphere, jangly indie pop, and cute synths, they’re like Kim Deal-led Pixies meets Switchblade Symphony, but awash in a pleasant, harmless, Christmasy glow.
At the same time, they’re not particularly catchy. The music made me warm n’ fuzzy, but there is also something mechanical and off-putting about the music, similar to how I feel about ambient. This is fantastic background music, especially if you’re smoking opium at a rollerdisco on Saturn, but the melodies get lost under the weight of atmosphere.
Bottom Line: Ethereal female-fronted indie-pop. It’ll take you away, but you won’t remember where.
