You know you’re doing something right when your band has not only one vibraphone player, but two. Vibes are to indie rock what the moog was to Rush: not a necessity, but goddamn, it’s great to hear it.

Musically, Archaeology play instrumental indie/math rock, only with vocals. The music is pretty with the usual cascading, melodic guitars and jazzy, open drumming, but the vocals add a layer of depth with a touch of darkness and occasional post-punk-type catharsis.

The album kicks off spiffily, peters out midway, and then picks up again toward the end. Songs tend to feel longer than they are – partly because of the slow tempo and repetitive guitarwork, but also because of quiet intros and outros and middle parts where things are taken down a notch. (Note to indie bands – there’s no reason to have slow breakdowns if your entire sound is a slow breakdown.)

Bottom Line: Slow, methodic indie rock.
