Big Fuckin Skull have a big fuckin hard-on for the Misfits. They paint their faces like skulls, sing quick, campy horror punk tunes with lots of “whoa-ohs.” Sounds good on paper, but the scariest thing about Big Fuckin Skull is their incompetence.

The Misfits were geniuses and I love them to death (and beyond), but I’d be the first to admit that ever since they laid the groundwork, horror punk has not been the hardest music in the world to play. I’d wager good money that any of us who were in a high school punk band covered “Where Eagles Dare” at some point, and even the shittiest of us did a halfway decent job at it.

So it’s disappointing, if not mystifying, that BFS isn’t good at this. The songs are boring, poorly executed, and the “whoa-oh” gang vocals somehow sound terrible and un-fun. I mean, you have to try really hard to make “whoa-oh” sound this bland and uncool. These guys need to drink more blood or something.

Bottom Line: Simple, easy, fun horror punk somehow done wrong.
