Blister take a garagey approach to punk with a sound that falls both on the proto- and post-punk sides. Some songs have a messy, not-quite-punk glam quality reminiscent of mid-70s NY bands, while other tunes drip with ominous bass, dissonant guitar sound, and yowling vocals.
Outside of the straight-up punk tune “Pissin’ Rod” and their mirror version of “Rockaway Beach,” the vocal melodies are slow- to mid-tempo, while the accompaniment is fast and punky. It gives them a sludgy and sloppy feel that doesn’t appeal to me.
I’m not sure if Blister are purposely garagey and off-kilter, or if they’re just too sloppy and grunge-minded to play punk well. But on their theme song “B.L.I.S.T.E.R.” they promise “we’ll kill your ass, we’ll rock you hard” and now I feel cheated.
