Well, this is new. They only have four members, but they have this huge, grand sound. They utilize group singing and vocal overdubs to create this echoey gospel chorus that is oddly uplifting.
Of course, sometimes the heavy gospel makes them sound like Christian rock, but they’re usually good at keeping it indie. Their sound could be considered symphonic/space rock – they’re like the gently orchestral rock of Spiritualized with the sweetness of Camera Obscura, a twist of Bjork, and the warm fuzziness of a bunch of friends belting out carols around a piano.
The band also injects a capella, folk, and even some spaghetti western, all in lushly layered vocal ways. It’s pretty interesting.
I recognize that this vocal-heavy gospel rock may create a new annoying subgenre of indie rock, like what the marching band sound did last year, but for the moment I’ll bask in the still-uncool uniqueness of these guys.
Bottom Line: Raise your voices to the sky and SING!
