So after a couple listens, I’m still not sure how much I like this one. I mean, it has the polished indie guitar rock sound that seems to do really well these days, but the problem is, it makes Bright Light Fever sound like every other band on the market today, with one exception. The band have a fucking awesome vocalist, a guy with a deep and powerful rock voice that sounds like the singer of Hot Hot Heat, except more controlled and less spastic. And what I like for the most part about the record is that it rocks pretty hard without being too loud or too uncontrolled; here is a band that flows well and really jives together.

So herein lies my problem: I like it, but not so much as to probably have any big desire to go back and listen to it. But I know that given their sound and style, they can make it pretty big. Would I recommend it to people who like well-written and tight indie rock music? Yes, but not in the sense that I’d expect it would change their life. Maybe I’ll love their next album. And my 3 star award is like giving the smart kid in the classroom a C so that he works harder on the next test. I’m pushing Bright Light Fever to do better, and make something lasting.

Bottom Line: Solid indie rock with great vocals, but really unremarkable otherwise.
