The Bullys play ’77 NYC punk in the snotty Dead Boys style. As silly and one-dimensional as it is, I’ve always been warm to this type of punk. Some, like Electric Frankenstein, elevate it to new levels of awesomeness. Others, like the Toilet Boys and The Bullys, are just decent. But decent ’77 NYC punk is still light-years better than the best emo band, and to me, this is the way punk guitar should sound.
Lyrically, the songs are about the lazy and mundane, like eating fast food, drinking beer, and not wanting to do shit. In other words, they’re my personal anthems. Juvenile? Sure, but what the punk scene has forgotten is that juvenile can be awesome. Ironically, when the Bullys try to sound anti-authority (“Against All Authority”) or tougher (“Slammer,” “Balls”), they come off as insincere and posturing. But they’re perfect when they do what they’re made to do – sing about cars and girls and booze and fuck everything else.
On a side note, I can’t believe this band is almost 10 years old! Man, time passes. And much respect to Johnny Heff, RIP.
Bottom Line: Grab your leather jacket and cheap beer and rock out.
