If you take 50% of Pepper and mix it with 50% of Too Rude then you just about get Can’t Hang. Their roots rock reggae provides the listener with a relaxed record with a handful of intense moments of punk rock fury.
Personally, I never tire of the sounds of bands like Pepper, Sublime, Long Beach Dub Allstars and Too Rude. I’ve heard people call it white boy reggae but I see nothing wrong with a heavy bass line, steady upstrokes and a few echo effects here and there. There are some bands that can’t seem to get it right. Can’t Hang certainly is not one of those bands. They’re definitely not boring and like to change things up all the while sticking to the steady reggae pace that resonates throughout “Blood Sweet & Beers”. The album starts off with “Close My Eyes”, a song that could cause you to confuse them with Slightly Stoopid, then it jumps to a reggae song that starts and begins with straight up punk rock while finally kicking it into overdrive with the aptly titled punk song, “Destruction Train”. And that’s just the first three songs.
“Blood Sweat & Beers” continues to keep the listener on their toes with a variety of sounds that mesh well with the reggae backdrop that Can’t Hang play so well. I would put this disc up there with “Kona Town”, “Wonders of the World” and **GASP** even “40oz To Freedom”. Yes, it is that good. Now if you’ll excuse me, the CD is over and it’s time for another spin.
Bottom Line: They may sound like Pepper or Sublime but Can’t Hang manage to create their own unique sound.
Notable Tracks: L’amour, Trouble, Escape, Destruction Train
