Another offering from this prolific and versatile indie band. This one appeared at first glance to be a straight-up indie rock sound with some shoegazy new wavey undercurrents, but surprises abound.

For instance, starting with “On and On,” the album begins incorporating upbeat, futuristic electro-rock flourishes. Another surprise is “Mayday” – a strange (but not very strong) ballady-type tune that features flamenco guitar from Patrick Fugit, who I presume is the same guy from Almost Famous and Wristcutters (which, by the way, is a great and sadly overlooked movie).

Other tunes of note are the rhythmic “The Matador” and the synthy “Oxygen Overload.” However, the three bonus tracks – Casio dance versions of We Will Rock You, Satisfaction, and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da – are superfluous and unnecessary.

Weighing in at 17 tracks (and one of 50 albums they’ve released this year), the album is understandably uneven but does include a few strong tracks. I’m starting to wonder, though, if maybe they should focus on quality over quantity.

Bottom Line:
Notable Tracks: Mexico, On And On, Lawsuits and Death, The Matador
